Herdade Do Esporão Aragonês Alentejo 2003

Member Review by ryanopaz:

Deep dark and purple to core, infact light barely gets through this one. Th enose is a mix of vanilla, pepper, wet slate, and nuts, all smeared across a palate of dark fruits. In the mouth it causes me to drool with it's lush texture and fine tannins. The oak makes itself known in the background as myriad flavors come through in the mouth with cherry, blackberries, dark chocolate, pepper, cut grass and pure grape notes being only a few. 3.5/5 [NR]

In the heart of Alentejo region, 180 Km east of Lisbon, in Reguengos de Monsaraz, the Herdade do Esporão was aquired by Finagra with the main porpuse of producing wines of great quality. From 1975 until 1979, the Herdade do Esporão was occupied during the revolutionary and agricultural periods. Only after this period Finagra was allowed to proceed the winery project. Our modern cellars were built in 1987. A new stage of Finagra project was acomplished. In 1989 the first wine "Esporão" was considered one of the best Portuguese wines and three years later the brand "Monte Velho" was launched. In 1995, after our brands were considered among the best ones, new investments were made. A new area of vineyard was planted and the existent was completely renovated. A dam with 4.000.000 m3 capacity was built, feeding a drip irrigation system that covers all the vineyard. The purchase of Perdigões Estate, with 180 ha of vineyards, the expansion of the cellar and the construction of the wine tourism complex are some of the most recent investments of this dinamic company developing the "Herdade do Esporão". Trincadeira/Aragonez and Cabernet Sauvignon 1 yr American Oak Nose shows green pepper, spice, dilll, wet slate, and chokecherry. Very rich. In the mouth it's soft and lush with strong fine tannins. Flavors of Raspberrry, pepper, cherry, and light smokey oak round out this fun wine. Rich and dense yet with an overall freshness. 4/5 [NR]

Very, very good bottle of wine. Dark aubergine in color, this wine was not filtered and threw some sediment so if you don't like that you may want to decant. Aromas of plum and vanilla were echoed on the palate, which had some blueberry notes enter into as well. There was a grip in the mid-palate from toasty oak, and the texture was fairly silky. A nice substitute for pinot noir, it would go with almost anything you would have pinot with (pork, mushrooms). We had with sausage pasta with saffron.

Dark cranberry red color with a tinge of brown on the ring. Meat juice, cranberry or cherry syrup, and slate on the nose. Incredibly soft and silky in the mouth with cinnamon, nutmeg, dirt, meat with an overwhelming strong cranberry flavor on the finish. Medium body and acidity, although I sense the acidity is covering the tannins.
