Henry's Drive Reserve Shiraz 2004

Winemaker's Notes:

From a cooler climate sector of Padthaway, the 2004 Shiraz Reserve is an elegant, soft, complex effort revealing Southern Rhone-like aromas of garrigue, ground pepper, and spice box interwoven with blackberries, cassis, sweet cherries, and herbal undertones. This wild, rich, heady Shiraz tips the scales at 16% alcohol. Drink this provocative, undeniably pleasurable 2004 over the next 7-8 years.

During the nineteenth century establishment of the farming and wine industries of southeastern South Australia, horse-drawn coaches provided the only transportation of mail and passengers. The coach service proprietor in this part of the state was a Mr Henry John Hill, whose operation drove directly through a property owned more recently by three generations of the Longbottom family of Padthaway. Routes were known as Drives, thus the family’s wine business is today known as Henry\’s Drive. Henry's Drive is situated in the Padthaway district of South Australia, around 180 miles south east of Adelaide. It is naturally cooler than the more northerly Barossa Valley or McLaren Vale, but warmer and more consistent than Coonwarra, some 50 miles south, with which it shares a similar, former sea-bed, geology. The property is owned by the Longbottom family, who have been farmers in Padthaway since the 1940s. Their first vintage was in 1998. Read less

A dramatic wine, rich and spicy, almost Port-like, with exotic spices, bitter chocolate and black pepper notes mingling with ripe currant and plum flavors as they persist on a big finish. Drink now through 2007.

Big, muscular style has ultra ripe cherry and dusky spice flavors, finishing with flavors of rare meat and pepper. A brawny wine that's also a bit hot. Best after 2007.

The 2003 Shiraz Reserve, which I assume is made from the richest barrels, has all the same characteristics, with more weight, opulence, and persistence. The 16% alcohol is beautifully concealed by its prodigious concentration. Readers who love the extroverted personalities of these wild and crazy Australian reds should drink it over the next 10-12 years.
