Henry's Drive Padthaway H Shiraz Australia 2012

Winemaker's Notes:

Wine Advocate Review
Rated 91
Replacing the "Dead-letter Office" label, the deep garnet-purple colored 2012 "H" Syrah has pretty, lifted, black cherry and crushed blackberry aromas dotted with hints of anise, mocha and baking spices. Big and voluptuous in the mouth with a nice structure of medium to firm, grainy tannins and refreshing acid, it finishes long. Drink it now to 2020.
Wine Tasting Notes
This is the first vintage of "H" Syrah...it is an aromatic wine showing fresh blueberry, fragrant violet and underlying earthy notes on the nose. The palate is delicate and finely-structured, with vibrant rhubarb and blueberry characters, mixed with hints of anise and lavender. The flavors linger and the wine finishes with delicate, fine tannins.

During the nineteenth century establishment of the farming and wine industries of southeastern South Australia, horse-drawn coaches provided the only transportation of mail and passengers. The coach service proprietor in this part of the state was a Mr Henry John Hill, whose operation drove directly through a property owned more recently by three generations of the Longbottom family of Padthaway. Routes were known as Drives, thus the family’s wine business is today known as Henry\’s Drive. Henry's Drive is situated in the Padthaway district of South Australia, around 180 miles south east of Adelaide. It is naturally cooler than the more northerly Barossa Valley or McLaren Vale, but warmer and more consistent than Coonwarra, some 50 miles south, with which it shares a similar, former sea-bed, geology. The property is owned by the Longbottom family, who have been farmers in Padthaway since the 1940s. Their first vintage was in 1998. Read less

($40; 16% alcohol) Full ruby. Mocha, cedar, truffle and strong nutty oak on the nose. Fat, sweet and thick, with a strong saline character along with truffle, vegetal, smoke and meat notes.
