Henry's Drive M Reserve Shiraz Padthaway 2009

Member Review by jessgum:

Unique wine! Smells of dates and spice cake. Full bodied, lucsious tastes of morels, blackberries, velvety strawberries. So different from typical shiraz's. Balanced, nice finish. A steal at $30! This would be great with lamb shanks.

During the nineteenth century establishment of the farming and wine industries of southeastern South Australia, horse-drawn coaches provided the only transportation of mail and passengers. The coach service proprietor in this part of the state was a Mr Henry John Hill, whose operation drove directly through a property owned more recently by three generations of the Longbottom family of Padthaway. Routes were known as Drives, thus the family’s wine business is today known as Henry\’s Drive. Henry's Drive is situated in the Padthaway district of South Australia, around 180 miles south east of Adelaide. It is naturally cooler than the more northerly Barossa Valley or McLaren Vale, but warmer and more consistent than Coonwarra, some 50 miles south, with which it shares a similar, former sea-bed, geology. The property is owned by the Longbottom family, who have been farmers in Padthaway since the 1940s. Their first vintage was in 1998. Read less

Notes: Henry’s Drive Vignerons was established by Kim Longbottom and her late hus-band Mark and takes it’s name from the 19th century Mail Coach service that once ran through their property. Back then coaches were the only means of moving people and their mail through the farming and wine growing areas of South East-ern South Australia and the men who drove them had the respect and admiration of all. Around Padthaway that duty fell to Henry John Hill and his route was known as “Henry’s Drive”. Things have moved on somewhat but hard work and dedication remains as Kim continues to build the business she started with Mark with a singular aim as strong now as it was then— to craft outstanding wines from one of Australia’s great wine growing regions. The Story: This is the signature wine of Henry’s Drive Vignerons and encompasses our ap-proach to winemaking at it’s finest. Only the most exceptional parcels of fruit are hand selected from our family vineyard. Made with minimal intervention, this wine is a true expression of the vineyard, variety and terroir of Padthaway. “The creation of Henry’s Drive Reserve Shiraz was the vision and passion of my late husband, Mark Longbottom. With this wine, I pay tribute to his strength, de-termination and character.” Kim Longbottom The Wine: A complex wine that changes and evolves with time in the glass, exhibiting per-fumed aromas of thyme and lavender along with spearmint, tea leaves and dark berry fruits. The palate is rich and layered with bright berry fruits, subtle earthi-ness, dark toasted spice, hints of smoke and fresh mint. A concentrated, complex and structural wine with a full finish and fine long tannins. The Specs: Fermented on skins for 5-7 days, with the final stages being completed in barrel to impart integrated oak and soft approachable tannins. Matured for 20 months in a mixture of old and new, French and American oak. The fruit for the Henry’s Drive Reserve Shiraz is sourced exclusively from a single family vineyard in Padthaway. Grown on a gentle slope in deep sandy soil with patches of red loam, on a limestone base. Huge old Red Gum Eucalyptus trees border the vineyard offering protection from the elements while imparting subtle flavours into the fruit.

Supple, rich and ripe, with a distinctively charry, peppery edge to the cushiony-soft black cherry, plum and cooked-rhubarb flavors, all of which swirl attractively through the finish. Tannins are beautifully integrated. Drink through 2009.

Big, muscular style has ultraripe cherry and dusky spice flavors, finishing with flavors of rare meat and pepper. A brawny wine... Wine Spectator. A Syrah wine from South Australia in Australia. 2003 Henry's Drive Shiraz Reserve 750ml

Round, supple and generous, with its firmly packed blackberry, dark plum, pepper and spicy oak flavors. Has impressive depth and beautifully polished textures, and the flavors last and last. Drink through 2011.
