Henry of Pelham Riesling Ice Wine 2000

External Review by Premium Wine & Spirits:

A bit closed at first, then swirling, characteristic Riesling aromas of pears, olden delicious apples and superripe peaches appear. Thick and intense, its almost overwhelming in its honeyed richness. Sweet enough to pair with many desserts, but try it with blue-veined cheeses for a special treat.

Henry of Pelham Family Estate Winery is a premium estate winery located on the Short Hills Bench at the base of the Niagara Escarpment (a United Nations biosphere) in St. Catharines, Ontario. Owned and operated by the Speck family since 1988, the land was first deeded to our great, great, great grandfather, Nicholas Smith, in 1794. Nicholas fought with Butler’s Rangers in the American Revolutionary war. His youngest son Henry of Pelham built the building that houses our wine store and hospitality rooms. Henry built the former carriage house in 1842. He signed his name Henry of Pelham recognizing Pelham road as one of the main through fares in Niagara. With the premise that fine wine is grown and not made, we take low yields and tend our 170-acre estate vineyards with meticulous care. Only small volumes of handmade wines are produced to ensure the highest standards of quality. Every vintage of Henry of Pelham wine receives the VQA stamp of approval. Our dedication to high quality has been rewarded with many domestic and international awards. "As a family owned and operated winery we are dedicated to producing wines grown from the distinctive soils and climate of the Niagara Peninsula and most specifically the famous and well regarded Short Hills Bench. We are fiercely committed to consistently growing and making only the finest wines by focusing on constant improvements in our vineyards and winery, low yields and wines that have true elegance, finesse and age ability." Gorgeous aromas of citrus blossom, honey and apricot introduce a sweet, racy dessert wine that dances across the palate. Concentrated, complex and focused, it remains nimble and keeps pumping out the flavors. Long, rich finish. Drink now through 2005. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.

Intense aromas and flavors of pear and apricot are allied to a thick texture. Intense and persistent, finishing with an almost tannic feel. Drink now through 2001.

Spicy, floral and with a touch of minerality, this is poised and layered. It's dense and honeyed on the palate but overall, has a balanced, attractive character.
