Henriques & Henriques Sercial Madeira 10 Years Old NV
George, Duke of Clarence, provided the best-known celebrity endorsement for any drink when, in 1478, he was sentenced to death in the Tower of London. Permitted by his executioners to decide how he should die, he chose, being a man of discernment, to drown himself in a butt of Malmsey (Malvasia) - a glorious rich way to go and a claim unmatched by any other 'noble' grape variety. Madeira starts life as fermenting must and is then fortified, either to arrest fermentation for a Malmsey or a Bual, or after fermenting out, in the case of Sercial or a Verdelho (to a minimum of 17% alcohol) and undergoes its own very special maturation process. These outstanding collection of wines consistently win gold medals internationally and have all the classic attributes of Madeiras, with the concentration that age produces. The Bual and Malmsey, although sweeter wines, have plenty of acidity on the finish to punctuate their richness and to add intrigue to the long lingering finish. The colour of the Sercial and Verdelho wines has darkened with age. This classic Sercial is a dry wine with a clean aroma which shows the wines evolution. This wine is reminiscent of brown spices, nuts and citrus peel. It is a complex wine with fresh acidity and with an extraordinary long finish.
