Rating: 85/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the September 2010 issue. Hendry Zins are typically overripe and so is this one-no surprise that it sports 15.8% alcohol, and thus no surprise that its deep, bold aromas are dominated by dried grape and tarry smells. Fruit, however, is the missing ingredient and while one can find hints of blackberries in both nose and mouth, so too does one find too much dryness and tannin. Power hungry Zinfanatics will love it. The rest of the world will look elsewhere.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now. Further bottle aging can improve this wine.

One of the hallmarks of Block 28 is its dark, concentrated fruit. The natural complexity and concentration of Block 28 fruit is the reason it receives 15% more new oak barrels than the Block 7 Zinfandel bottling. Primary aromas are deep and full of berries and black currants, with intriguing notes of licorice, smoke, earth and spice. The wine is full-bodied and mouth-filling, with a long finish. Fine-grained tannins provide significant structure, making this an ideal wine with richer, meatier dishes, even barbecue. (And George’s favorite wine with artichokes!)

Hendry Block 28 is located on bench lands west of the town of Napa. This 4.17 acre block is 160 feet above sea level and has thin, stony Boomer Series soils. Morning fog and strong afternoon breezes from San Pablo Bay moderate the maritime climate. The vines were planted in 1995 using St. George roots and grafted with bud wood selected from an old vine Zinfandel vineyard. The vines are spaced 6.9' x 5', cordon trained and spur pruned. A vertical trellis system supports the cordon and the canopy. In 2003, the median bud break in Block 28 occurred April 1. Median bloom was June 1 and median veraison was August 12. Harvest was October 2 with a yield of 2.8 tons per acre. The alcoholic fermentation was completed in approximately one week in closed fermentation tanks. The wine was pressed and put into barrels for malolactic fermentation. Aging was fourteen months in French oak barrels, 50% of which were new.The concentrated dark fruit flavors include dark berry pie, cooked sour cherries and black currant. Other aromas and flavors include black licorice, dusty earth and mineral, sweet pipe tobacco and bay. The French oak is spicy and well integrated. The wine is full bodied, with very fine tannin structure and a long finish. The alcohol is 15.1%.1350 cases produced

Winemaker's Notes:

"Deep berry and typical Block 28 spice. Fruit, acid and tannins are in balance. Velvety mouthfeel develops with exposure to oxygen. Dense flavors and aromas of dark berries, with complex secondary elements of spice and cocoa. Block 28 is a versatile pairing partner with medium-rich to rich meaty dishes that are grilled, braised, or cooked in a wood-burning oven." -Winery
