Member Reviews for Heitz Napa Valley Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Cabernet Sauvignon
Add your reviewLovely nose. Mint, chocolate, red and purple flowers with red, purple and black berry fruit. Fruity with great acid frame. Relaxed tannin. This wine is made for food. Luscious, mouth-coating fruit. Driven by red fruit with blackberry. Masculine and powerful. Still has big acid with will age and integrate more with time. Plenty of life left in it. 92 pts. 5/10/13 at winery
I have never had a better wine from Napa in 40 years of collecting wine. I was shocked! Decanted about 2 hours prior to drinking and served at 64ºF. Tannins were still quite youthful but very smooth and soft. The most striking feature was the finish which went on for over a minute. People were talking to me as I tasted it and I did not hear a word they said. The nose was exquisite. No words can describe this taste. I am not sure which was more of a factor, my taste buds or my nose. I will remember this wine for ever. The funny thing is I was not expecting such a great wine. I brought this wine from my cellar to Indianapolis's Amalfi's restaurant (with corkage fee), had them decant it and came back later with my son for a father/son dinner. I have opened much more collectible wines for my "special occasions". However, this turned out to be an exceptional special occasion. Thick, chewey, minty, earthy, chocolaty, blackberry, are words that normally would describe a wine like this, but it does not do it justice. I just had the 1998 vintage a few weeks ago, which was excellent, but absolutely no comparison. This is my first wine from California that I give 100 score.
Opened in Dec. 2008. Nice cork, no sign of moisture. Decanted for 3 hours and shared with 3 friends over duck. Colour: A bit of orange and clearer than expected, with a little residus in the bottle. Nose: Exceptional nose, really strong and profound. Not too oaky for a Cal Cab, Smell of berries and hint of vanilla. Mouth: Great wine, rich and silky at the same time. Long-lasting taste. Less strong in mouth than on the nose. General: Easily comparable with high-end Bordeaux. I was a bit anxious on the 18 years in bottle, but still no problem. Great wine !
A very nice wine that has aged gracefully. A supple berry finish with a hint of eucalyptus. I drank this wine in March of 2008 and the tannins were pretty much all gone with a fair amount of sediment. Deffinarely a classy cabernet.
Delicious "brown sugar" bouquet and chewy fruit. Would drink again and again if I could.
Its good, but old. We had it several years ago and it was fantastic, but it's lost its luster. Very earthy, mineral, truffles. Finish is ok, not great, If you have any, drink now, dont wait a minute longer!
When you are approached by someone loud and forceful, with a lot of vigor, but they are unorganized in thought or they have all the energy but none of the content or concomitant direction, then it's rather annoying. But when you're met with someone with the same vim, that energetic and powerful conviction, and they do have something to say, which is direct and concise and unapologetic, then you pay attention, and more often than not, you subscribe. This latter is how I'd describe this wine. Its structure and balance are solid and clear cut: eucalyptus, cassis, cocoa. But its finesse is no less distinct or less potent: mint, anise, sage. The organization in this wine is remarkable and it makes no bones about its character: take it or leave it. Delicious.

Tasting Notes: The 2009 Martha’s Vineyard is an impressive wine with remarkable clarity and depth of flavor. The enticing dark garnet color of this Cabernet softens and elongates as you tilt the wine glass to see the translucence of the hue on the edges. Its classic, clean mint aroma evokes a smile in recognition of an “old friend”. On the palate, layers of complexity show an opulence of fruit, smoothly integrated with the core tannins of a slightly cooler growing season. This is a beautifully focused wine with textbook varietal character. The overall vibrancy of this Cabernet promises strength and balance that will carry forward for many years of enduring enjoyment – a true treasure from the Oakville appellation within the Napa Valley.

The 2008 Martha's Vineyard Cabernet is enchanting - beautifully balancing the unique aspects of vineyard and vintage. That's the good news. The not-so-good-news is that there were only 500 cases produced - one of the smallest releases of Martha's Vineyard ever. This elegant Cabernet is a fruit forward wine with an engagingly soft and sweet center, and just a touch of graphite from the gravelly soils. Aromas of eucalyptus, sage, and green tea mingle with blackberry and cassis. The palate shows incredible finesse, and smooth tannins lead to a long, silky finish. In true Martha's fashion, this Cabernet is lovely to drink now and has the structure to age gracefully. - Winery

Dense and firm, this gutsy red shows a nice flex behind the tannins, with rich flavors of dark berry, dark chocolate, cedar and melted black licorice. The signature minty trait presents itself for now as a bay leaf and black tea aroma. Drink now thro... Wine Spectator. The 2007 Martha s is a luscious cabernet with an enticing aroma of mint, plum and summer blueberries. Full-bodied with layers of complexity, this wine is beautifully balanced allowing all the pure, elegant flavors to be appreciated and enjoyed.

Minty bay leaf aromas are pure, with a spicy edge, leading to firm dark berry, mocha, mineral and sage flavors that are tight and well-structured, with firm, ripe tannins that provide an excellent backbone. Much too young now, however tempting. Should only get much better. Best from 2013 through 2022. 3,569 cases made. -JL The gorgeous varietal flavors of 2005 Marthas Vineyard Cabernet reflect this wines classic pedigree.
