Heitz Wine Cellars inhabits a pristine valley in the eastern hills of St. Helena known to the locals as Spring Valley. In 1964, Joe and Alice Heitz acquired this 160-acre ranch and winery to accommodate their burgeoning family business. The gray stone cellar, constructed of hand-chiseled perlite in 1898, safeguards Heitz' collection of French oak barrels which are filled with aging wine. The rich patina of its weathered walls is in perfect harmony with the high-tech equipment dotting the landscape of the winery's grounds in the 21st century. Second generation Kathleen Heitz Myers and David Heitz are now at the helm as president and winemaker. They have each been integral to the success of the family business since the 1970s, helping to build the worldwide reputation for Heitz Cellars --- a name that has become synonymous with luxury in the world of winemaking. Heitz Wine Cellars has earned countless accolades for its dazzling wines every year since 1961. Their three renowned vineyard-designated wines --- Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Trailside Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon and Bella Oaks Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon --- are the highlight of the winery's distinguished resumé. Heitz' remarkable Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon has been a collector's favorite for over 40 years. Wine Spectator underscored this wine's legendary status by selecting Martha's Vineyard Cabernet as one of the Top 12 wines of the 20th Century. Heitz Wine Cellars' Chardonnay, Grignolino, Zinfandel and Port have also earned their share of ardent fans over the years. To many admirers, the Heitz label is the premiere symbol of fine wine and graceful hospitality. "We handcraft our wines with the utmost respect for the incomparable vineyards of the Napa Valley. It's a real pleasure to share a bit of their magical bounty in every bottle of wine we make." - Kathleen Heitz Myers, President Since the winery ranch also includes the Heitz' family home, we direct visitors to our original site on St. Helena Highway where we have welcomed wine lovers for almost half a century. Very powerful wine, but still manages to maintain balance. Price is right for napa, but in my opinion the whole valley is overrates, so its a little overpriced for me.

Drank the '01 last night after airing it out for about one hour - with Grilled Strips. Much better than expected! WS version of a rating in my book would be a 91-93.

The 2001 Trailside Vineyard Cabernet is a spectacular, densely hued wine combining the impressive characteristics of its Rutherford terroir with the power of the vintage. A glorious burst of sun ripened blackberry with notes of cedar fascinates the nose and fills the mouth with a stunning purity that unfolds in layers of intrigue. This Cabernet is skillfully balanced with polished tannins that usher the rich varietal flavors to a lengthy and unforgettable finish. This classic wine will age gracefully. - Winery

This was a spectacular performance from this hallowed vineyard as well as one of Napa Valleyandrsquo;s great historic terroirs. Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, it reveals a still youthful personality and will benefit from another 5andndash;7 years of bottle age. An opaque purple color is followed by aromas of graphite, creme de cassis, flowers and background earth as well as spice. The old eucalyptus-filled aromatics of a young Marthaandrsquo;s Vineyard are nowhere to be found as the 2001 is dominated by fruit and earth. Full-bodied and powerful with superb integration of wood, tannin, acidity and alcohol, this large-scaled red is capable of three or more decades of cellaring. It is unquestionably a youthful classic, but it requires patience from its owners. Anticipated maturity: 2016andndash;2035.

In the early 1980s, the Heitz Family acquired the Trailside vineyard. Compared to Heitz's other single vineyards, this bottle is considered the most robust and powerful style with bold fruit and assertive but upfront use of new oak.

A true-to-form Martha's Vineyard. Enticing chocolate-covered cherry, berry and mint give a complex, distinctive flavor profile. Sleek, elegant and long on the finish, where the flavors turn juicy. andmdash; 2001 California Cabernet blind retrospective (June 2011). Drink now through 2020.

Offers a beam of red currant and black cherry fruit that's intense, lively and persistent, with good acidity and firm tannins. Drink now through 2011. 4,802 cases made. -JL The 2001 Bella Oaks is a beautiful wine. The pure elegance and refinement in the balance are amazing. This wine has it all --- classic Cabernet aromas, lush, sweet cherry fruit and a slow, creamy follow-through on the palate that is mesmerizing. You are in for a treat. The overall softness makes this wine quite drinkable now, but the graceful balance will ensure longevity. - Winery
