Pale yellow. Aromas of pineapple, lime, toasted grain, smoke and dried nuts; turned increasingly stony and Chassagne-like with aeration. Concentrated and sweet but dry and delicate, with tightly wound flavors of lime, spice, oatmeal and earth. At once dense and lacy, with terrific verve for California chardonnay. Finishes spicy, dry and long.

Beautifully crafted, sleek, rich and refined, with a tight, elegant beam of spicy pear, citrus, honey and fresh, clean earth. Tapered on the finish, where flavors are long and detailed. Nary a trace of oak in the classy, streamlined debut from the California-based Hyde family and their relatives, the de Villaines of Burgundy.

Appealing for its pure flavors, with intense ripe pear, citrus, earth and nutmeg shadings, it's vibrant and crisp, with lively acidity and a long, complex finish that keeps echoing rich fruit flavors. Needs time. Best from 2005 through 2010.

An earthy style of chardonnay, this emphasizes tight, dry flavors of lees, giving a sense of gunflint, rolled oats, the dust off soil in the sun. It grows more expressive with air; decant this with grilled escolar or age it several years. Cousins by marriage, Larry Hyde and Aubert de Villaine (of Domaine Romanée-Conti), set up this project at Hyde's vineyard in Carneros.

A brilliant effort. Intense, deep and concentrated, with pure, sharply focused fruit that reverberates with flavor, offering tiers of fresh-cut apple, pear and citrus flavors that are crisp and lively. Has the richness and density to age a decade. Drink now through 2010.

Tight and focused, delivering a beam of lime, citrus and green apple fruit thatandrsquo;s crisp and lively, gaining depth and a minerally nuance on the long finish. Drink now through 2012.

Bright, pale yellow. Leesy, deeply pitched aromas of fruit cocktail, earth and minerals, complicated by toffee, clove and tropical fruit nuances. Rich and silky in the mouth, with an exotic high-toned quality and a fatter texture than the de la Guerra bottling. This is sweeter, fuller and more pliant chardonnay, with a deeper pitch to its flavors. Finishes with very good breadth and length, as well a a mineral firmness.
