Haywood Zinfandel Sonoma Valley 1983

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Smoky, nutty and still oaky on the nose with lots of wild herbs, a mineral base and spicy almost currant fruit. Almost soft on entry with nicely integrated acidity this offers up simple, burnished wild raspberry fruit with a hint of leafy spicy. At 30 years of age this is still a tough wine, very structured and rugged, and long lived with a little cough lozenge note on the rather long finish. This really needs some food. 86pts

The history of Haywood winery begins in 1973 as Peter Haywood searched for land that would produce exceptional grapes. In a valley just one mile from Sonoma’s historic town square he found what he was looking for thin, dry soil on sunny well drained hills that would yield a limited quantity of intensely flavored fruit. Haywood named the vineyard Los Chamizal the Spanish term for the hardwood thickets that covered the valley. He purchased 280 acres of hard ground and spent the next five years clearing and planting what would eventually become Los Chamizal Vineyards. Today production focuses on the grapes grown in Los Chamizal’s unique mountain terroir and emphasis will continue to be on the three estate Zinfandels, Los Chamizal, Rocky Terrace and Morning Sun. The vineyard’s 42 acres of Zinfandel, grafted with budwood selections from seven North Coast vineyards pre-dating prohibition are planted in nine distinct blocks with soils ranging from well-drained sandy loams at the lower elevations to thin fractured basalt soils at highest elevations. We invite you to try our boldly flavored, single vineyard wines that demonstrate elegance and commitment to small scale winemaking. Read less
