Havens Wine Cellars Syrah Carneros 2004

Member Review by qmckenna:

very deep color, opaque dark purple, nose features bacon, smoke, leather, tar, oak and alcohol, soft tannin, solid and serious in the mouth with medium+ body long finish. A serious wine that deserve to be enjoyed with food--not a party gulp. Reminiscent of a northern Rhone rather than an Aussie.

Wine Advocate ReviewThe 2004 Syrah Hudson Vineyard is a well-proven site for top-notch Syrah. Its bacon fat, licorice, blackberry, cassis, floral, and peppery-scented bouquet is followed by a full-bodied, opulent red that is best drunk over the next 7-8 years.Wine Tasting NotesThe very best Syrah starts out life in cellar very fat, full, and somewhat awkward. But unlike the Bordeaux varieties, it then refines itself while in barrel, becoming more elegant, balanced, and floral. The exotic high tones of lavender and orchid, the white pepper spice, and the long finish develop from what began as an ungainly child. Our Hudson has followed that program, and now offers power in elegant form, real Syrah from Carneros terroir.
