External Reviews for Havens Wine Cellars Merlot Napa Valley
Intense, with concentrated, earthy currant and cherry flavors. Picks up nice oak shading on the finish. Drink now through 2004.
Deep, bright ruby-red. Riper, oakier aromas of strawberry, cherry, milk chocolate, cinnamon and nutmeg. Larger-scaled and more obviously structured, with stronger acids than the regular Merlot. Creamy in the middle but not yet revealing itself, but really exploded as it opened in the glass, showing strong black cherry flavor that lingers beyond the dusty tannins. Very impressive California Merlot.
The 1996 Merlot Reserve should satisfy Merlot lovers given its deep ruby color, and rich, chocolately, weedy, intensely smoky and seductive aromatics. Lush-textured, with impressive black cherry, chocolate and berry flavors, this full-bodied, elegant, stylish Merlot reveals plenty of depth and richness, but no hard edges. Drink it over the next 7-8 years.
The 2000 Merlot Reserve is a powerful effort for the vintage. It boasts outstanding concentration as well as pure mocha-infused black cherry and currant fruit, medium to full body, and wonderful suppleness and finesse. Drink it over the next 7-8 years.
Bright ruby-red. More fruit-dominated aromas of blackberry syrup and licorice. Then sweeter and fatter in the mouth than the regular merlot, with spicy flavors of red berries, tobacco, fresh herbs, licorice and game. Dense, pliant and aromatic. Finishes with broad, dusty tannins. Nicely balanced merlot with real character.

Understated, complex style of Merlot with layers of cedar, dark fruits, and tea on the nose. Silky texture, mature wine with a lush, full body, this wine from an outstanding vintage and producer is balanced and well-crafted. A hearty match for braised beef and brown sauce.
