What to Expect

The classic Bordeaux blends rely on either Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon for the bulk of the wine with additions of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec helping to add complexity, color, body and structure to the finished wine.

Winemakers Notes

In 1992 we introduced Bourriquot, moved by the memory of great wines we love from the Bordeaux Right Bank that feature blends of Cabernet Franc and Merlot. “Bourriquot” (Boo-ree-ko) is a slang word for a horse with its own mind, one that is not easily controlled. Or a person of the same type (like certain hard-headed winemaking sorts). You might say this critter leads the way in our whole stable–wines a bit outre for our little valley, pulling in a dissident direction, yet finally quite traditional.

This subversive horse has now made a bit of a name for himself, coming from great read more...sites with a distinctive blend. The 2000 is going to further this reputation, one of the most exciting wines Havens has ever produced. The 2000 growing season continued the gradual warming trend of recent years. Spring began the way we like it, warm and dry, and continued with our classic marine-influenced cool mornings virtually all Summer. Then September warmed up on cue and gently nudged each vineyard lot to a slow, balanced ripeness. When the growing season was done and all the wines were in the winery, we looked at each other and said, with a cross of hope and amazement, that this could be one of the great vintages of our lifetime, so perfectly had it developed.

In contrast to our other Right Bank wine, Bourriquot is more finely-textured, somewhat more elegant than the strong flavors of the Merlot Reserve. The 2000 “horse” is explosive out of the glass, with the same fine dark chocolate of the Merlot. But this is Franc in spades (or horseshoes): the fine cedar of a cigar box, fully mature roses, dried black cherries. The 2000 vintage has saddled this Bourriquot with big expectations, which it meets with the fullest body and longest finish of any vintage we’ve produced.

Bourriquot is unique in California, a wine based on Cabernet Franc and Merlot that attempts to celebrate those grapes’ native character, not cover it over. And we continue to be proud that its price is far less than other wines in its class.    (hide)
