In Bordeaux tradition, a white was tasted last in a string of 2008 tastings. Beautiful floral nose. Rich mouth-feel, layered with Tropical fruit, citrus, and minerality. Good acidity on a medium plus finish. A white that should age incredibly well with a storage life of 10-30 years, but showing well already. 90% Sauvignon Blanc, 5% Semillion, 5% Sauvignon Gris. 93 points.

The finest Smith-Haut-Lafitte I have ever tasted, the opaque purple-colored 2000 offers scents of camphor, graphite, creme de cassis, and licorice. This full-bodied, concentrated effort possesses low acidity and a persistent finish with considerable ripe, well-integrated tannin. It is an impressive tour de force for this estate. Kudos to the Cathiards. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2025.
The Cathiards have made a polished wine with generous fruit. It manages to combine a modern, rich style with a lightness of touch and freshness of fruit that make it instantly attractive.
A sensational effort, and undeniably the finest wine to ever emerge from this estate, the opaque purple-colored 2000 offers scents of tobacco, camphor, graphite, creme de cassis, and licorice. This full-bodied, concentrated effort possesses low acidity, a multi-layered texture, tremendous intensity of flavor, and a persistent finish with considerable ripe, well-integrated tannin. This is a brilliant example of equilibrium and finesse allied to considerable power and flavor. Kudos to the Cathiards. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2025.
Good full ruby. Roasted red and black fruits, smoke and licorice on the nose. Powerful, even a bit aggressive, with less sweetness and subtlety than the subsequent vintages. Finishes with big, chewy, ripe tannins and lingering notes of tobacco and leather. Very Grave in style. This appears to be in the process of shutting down in the bottle.
In the '98, the fruit is more classically ripe, a river of red currant rushing over gravel. The color is a luminous black, the aromas massive and powerful, yet the wine remains graceful. Even as the tannins are as dense and black as caviar, they also serve to energize the wine, encapsulating the fruit, holding it fresh, a drama in statis with a long development ahead.
This young Bordeaux shows intense aromas of wet earth, stone and berries. It's full-bodied, with super well-integrated tannins and a long, long finish. Very well made indeed. Best after 2008.
