Hauts de Pontet-Canet Pauillac 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

"I can’t believe the precision and complexity in this wine. This is really amazing with minerals, berries, currants and blackberries. Full and extraordinary. It goes on and on and on. Tasted twice. Best ever from Ducru…99-100." JS 4/11.

This is big, broad and powerfully rendered, but remarkably polished and refined at the same time. An enormous core of roasted fig, blackberry and black currant fruit is suavely wrapped with roasted apple wood and sandalwood, while dark espresso, loam and warm paving stone notes drive the finish. Very long, with a great tug of scorched earth at the end. A terrific combination of power and precision. Best from 2020 through 2040.

An absolutely amazing wine, from grapes harvested between the end of September and October 17, this blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot has close to 15% natural alcohol. It comes from one of the few biodynamic vineyards in Bordeaux, but you are likely to see many more, given the success that Tesseron seems to be having at all levels, both in his vineyards and in his fermentation/winemaking. An astounding, compelling wine with the classic Pauillac nose more often associated with its cross-street neighbor, Mouton-Rothschild, creme de cassis, there are also some violets and other assorted floral notes. The wine has off-the-charts massiveness and intensity but never comes across as heavy, overbearing or astringent. The freshness, laser-like precision, and full-bodied, massive richness and extract are simply remarkable to behold and experience. It is very easy, to become jaded tasting such great wines from a great vintage, but it is really a privilege to taste something as amazing as this. Unfortunately, it needs a good decade of cellaring, and that’s assuming it doesn’t close down over the next few years. This is a 50- to 75-year wine from one of the half-dozen or so most compulsive and obsessive proprietors in all of Bordeaux. Is there anything that proprietor Alfred Tesseron is not doing right? Talk about an estate that is on top of its game! Pontet-Canet’s 2010 is a more structured, tannic and restrained version of their most recent perfect wine, the 2009. Kudos to Pontet-Canet!

65% cabernet sauvignon 35% merlot. 35 year old vines farmed on 120 hectares of which 30% are ploughed by horse. 2010 is the first vintage certified bio dynamic. 60% new oak. What is most interesting about the 2010 Pontet Canet is the large amount of merlot in the blend given the strength of cabernet this year. Good decision? Nevertheless this has a very complex and intriguing nose of black fruits tobacco graphite and a touch of fresh cedar and spice. The palate is equally as impressive with notes of blackberry cassis and fresh cracked pepper and a broad silky texture. The finish lasts for close to a minute and the tannins are super well integrated. Things just keep getting better and better at Pontet Canet. This is undoubtedly one of the stars of the vintage. Drink 2020-2040. John Sweeney.

90% cabernet sauvignon 10% merlot. Aged for 18 months in 95% new French oak barrels other 5% of barrels are one year old. Lower yields (down by about 20%) have led to increased concentration compared to previous vintages. Harvest started with merlot on Sep 29 and ended with Cabernet on Oct 14. 13.95% alcohol. Aromas of black fruit burst from the glass complemented by notes of wild herbs and a touch of spice. Extremely captivating on the nose I kept swirling the wine while marveling at the complexity of aromas. On the palate the wine is lush complex and incredibly well structured even at this youthful stage. The bright acidity brought on by a cooler but sunny growing season is evident on the palate keeping the wine lively on the palate even while dark purple fruits dominate. The tannins are amazing lush and well-integrated providing the wine with tremendous length and grip. Lingers on the palate. This is a muscular impressive release from Ducru. Drink from 2020-2040. Alex
