Hautes Côtes de Nuits "Le Prieuré" Mongeard Mugneret 2004

Winemaker's Notes:

Vincent Mongeard and his wife Anne are the current custodians of this domaine, which was founded when Vincent’s grandfather and grandmother pooled their vineyards resources in the 1920s. Today, they have over 30 hectares of vineyard, stretching from Savigny in the south to Fixin in the north, and ranging from basic Bourgogne to holdings in Grand Crus like Richebourg, Clos de Vougeot, Echezaux and Grands Echezaux. The 25-52 year old vines are Guyot pruned. In the spring severe debudding takes place to regulate the crop. A green harvest is carried out in the summer to increase the chances of high quality and maturity. Harvest is always carried out by hand. This Pinot is deep ruby in colour with aromas of red fruits, blackcurrants and raspberries. The robust and richly perfumed bouquet gives this wine a character both silky and rustic. It is fresh, mellow and structured on the palate and exceptionally well balanced.

Since then and threw all the generations, the family is committed to their passion : Vine and Wine. The Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret, renamed since 1945, now operates, in the purist of the burgundy tradition, a large vineyard, from the Côte de Nuits to the Côte de Beaune, from Marsannay to the south of Dijon to Puligny-Montrachet, including all the most prestigious villages of the Côte : Gevrey-Chambertin, Vougeot, Nuits Saint Georges and Savigny les Beaune, the centre of the exploitation remaining in Vosne Romanée. Opened, not decanted, over 5 hours. Transparent garnet color. Light body. Bouquet of eucalyptus, cherry, milk chocolate with notes of cedar and orange rind. Good acid and very little tannin. Palate is vibrant with tart cherries and notes of baking spices and toasty vanilla. A long, sappy finish with notes of stonefruit and grass.

A huge, powerful nose of red cherry, leather, cloves, toffee, grilled meats, and toasty oak explodes from the glass. A very strong sense of extract, as well as great, great sweetness of fruit on the attack. This wine is very deep and full-bodied,

The dark ruby-colored Savigny -Les-Beaune reveals a deep, black raspberry and cherry-scented nose. On the palate, this gorgeously precise, thick, chewy, intensely concentrated and extracted wine is medium-to-full-bodied and packed with black

A pretty nose dominated by Savigny earth and hints of smoke, game and underbrush that is followed by delicious but edgy flavors that have limited phenolic maturity. I would be inclined to give this 3 to 4 years in bottle and drink over the next 5 as ... Burghound.
