Haut Brion Blanc 98-99js 2014

93-96 Points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media: “The 2014 Haut-Brion Blanc is a wine of texture above all else. It is also tightly wound and built for the long-term. Hints of smoke, slate, pear and citrus gradually unfold, revealing veins of supporting minerality and acidity that give the wine much of its energy. Deep, powerful and exotic, the Haut-Brion Blanc will captivate readers for many years to come. I very much like the sense of energy and overall tension here. The blend is 68% Sémillon and 32% Sauvignon Blanc.” 98-99 Points, James Suckling: “The is breathtaking like looking down a well that doesn’t end. Full and rich yet deep and gorgeous. It really does take your breath away. It goes on and on with minerals, dried apples, dried mangos and lime. Superb. This is very unique in the blend with 68% sémillon and the rest being sauvignon.” 95-98 points, Wine Spectator: "This returns to a more typical blend of two-thirds Sémillon and one-third Sauvignon Blanc after the rare inverse in 2013. Very youthful, with loads of salted butter, warm brioche and lemon curd notes trumping the quinine, white peach and green plum core for now. The toast is substantial but integrated, gilding rather than weighing down the mouthwatering finish. This should be another beauty in the long run. Tasted non-blind." 95-97 Points, The Wine Advocate: "The Château Haut-Brion Blanc 2014 is a blend of 32% Sauvignon Blanc and 68% Sémillon picked between 3 and 11 September. I found the Sémillon more expressive here and offers waxy, resinous scents intermingling with pear skin and fresh gooseberry. The palate is fresh and vibrant with more weight than the La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc '14: extremely well balanced with spine-tingling poise and power on the finish. You can barely notice the 14.75% alcohol. This is a thrilling Haut-Brion Blanc that vies with Domaine de Chevalier Blanc as "king of the dry whites."

Although by all accounts the vine has been rampant in these parts since at least Roman times, the earliest written mention that our archivist has discovered, citing a parcel of vines being cultivated at Haut-Brion dates back to only 1423. In the early days wines were known by the name of the parishes from whence they came. Later they became known as clarets. In the case of Haut-Brion, under the great stewardship of the Pontac family the wine's reputation was for years represented by the name of this enlightened and well respected family-- Pontac wine. Eventually as its renown grew, the name of the Estate came to replace that of its owners. The notion of a Great Growth was born! We find the first written mention of the wine in the Diaries of Samuel Pepys. While visiting the Royal Oak Tavern in London on April 10, 1663 Pepys wrote "There I drank a sort of French wine called Ho-Bryan (sic) which hath a good and most particular taste which I never before encountered....."
