Haut Brion 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

"Certainly there is a lot of richness with blackberries, creme de cassis, a touch of black olives and oyster shell...Very pure ripe fruits, seamless tannins, sensuous, quite a ravishing Haut Brion that is more precocious than many others...93-94." WA 4/08.

Although by all accounts the vine has been rampant in these parts since at least Roman times, the earliest written mention that our archivist has discovered, citing a parcel of vines being cultivated at Haut-Brion dates back to only 1423. In the early days wines were known by the name of the parishes from whence they came. Later they became known as clarets. In the case of Haut-Brion, under the great stewardship of the Pontac family the wine's reputation was for years represented by the name of this enlightened and well respected family-- Pontac wine. Eventually as its renown grew, the name of the Estate came to replace that of its owners. The notion of a Great Growth was born! We find the first written mention of the wine in the Diaries of Samuel Pepys. While visiting the Royal Oak Tavern in London on April 10, 1663 Pepys wrote "There I drank a sort of French wine called Ho-Bryan (sic) which hath a good and most particular taste which I never before encountered....." 43% Merlot, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cabernet Franc. The color is dark inky purple, almost opaque. The fruit is black berry and plum framed in mocha and caramelized toffee nougat. The palate is medium to full bodied with a beautiful attack of brig... Andy Frieden. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 2007 Haut Brion 1500ml

Purple and intense color. Nose appearing a bit discreet yet fine and fruity. On the palate the wine shows structure yet also some rusticity and a good weaving. With good presence in the mid-palate it evolves rich and also tannic. And yet it has not press wine. Nice aromatic and distinguished length. Jean-Marc Quarin - www.quarin.com

A brilliant effort, the 2007 Haut-Brion offers up aromas of crushed rocks, graphite, plum sauce, raspberries, and black cherries. The aromatics are truly complex for a three year-old wine. While the wine does not possess the fat and succulence of its nearby neighbor, La Mission Haut-Brion, its elegance, finesse, and nobility are apparent. Medium-bodied, rich, and intense with stunning aromatics, it can be drunk now or cellared for 15 years.

43% Merlot 44% Cabernet Sauvignon 13% Cabernet Franc. The color is dark inky purple almost opaque. The fruit is black berry and plum framed in mocha and caramelized toffee nougat. The palate is medium to full bodied with a beautiful attack of bright and pure red and black fruits with a hint of mocha chocolate framed in by well integrated tannins. I put this one at the top of my list for the vintage of First Growths along with Chateau Latour. Fat mid-palate and richness with plus concentration that everyone would want in a world class wine. Power and grace. Andy Frieden.

Good full medium red-ruby. Complex nose melds black raspberry, licorice, tobacco and hot rocks there's a suggestion of almost candied ripeness here. Then ripe, sweet and full, with a lush texture and considerable density to the plum and cherry flavor... Stephen Tanzer. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 2007 Haut Brion 750ml
