Editorial Reviews for Haut Bages Liberal
Smoky and rich on the nose with dried herbs and integrated wood in a rather big yet focused style. Attractively complex on entry, this is smooth, rich with fruit, very polished with a hint of olive to the deep black currant fruit. A moderately powerful if very fresh this shows lovely fruit in the mouth and finishes with some extracted inkiness, though this remains bright. 90pts
Woodsy, herbal, sweet wood swimming in sweet, plummy fruit – powerful and yet soft with well integrated structure blanketed but rich, slightly extracted feeling fruit, it’s really lovely with just enough rigid structure to keep it from getting cloying, tight on the finish but with sneaky length and excellent balance, a crowd pleaser (91-92)
Lovely nose here with direct cassis that offered nuances of gravelly dust, smoke, charred ashy wood and a very intense floral top note. This turned more savory with notes of rye bread and subtle caraway with hints of black pepper and a lovely cedary quality. This offers a great integration of fruit and structure. Up front there is a nice smokiness followed by almost liquory fruit that is cut by clean mineral notes. This offers up lovely bottle sweetness and while it is a touch coarse at first that element softens with time and the somewhat simple but sweet core of chewy fruit really carries through to the finish. this improved all night and is just excellent mature Bordeaux with plenty of life left. Drink now- 2015
Four and a half glasses
A dark red colored wine; spicy, toasted and leather and wild aromas; good balance between tannin and fruit, full bodied, silky.
"A balanced young wine, with smoky, blackberry and chewy aromas and flavors. Full and velvety, with a fresh finish...92-93" JS 04/11 "The finest Haut-Bages-Liberal I have tasted in many years, this sleeper of the vintage exhibits a blue/purple hue as well as projected aromatics of blue and black fruits, spring flowers and subtle background oak. Full-bodied with moderately high tannins, a layered mouthfeel and a long finish, it should be at its best between 2017 and 2035...91-93+" WA 05/11 "Shows friendly mocha and roasted tobacco up front, followed by a mouthfilling core of blackberry, plum and cassis. The dense but velvety finish has nice latent grip...91-94 (BT)" WS Web Only 2011
Young and slightly closed, classic Bordeaux attributes like cassis, cedarwood and fresh tobacco. Pretty balanced and complex with good tannic bite.
Two and a half glasses
The usual blackberry, tobacco and currant nose is definitely there... and definitely Pauillac - but the wine still seems a bit... well, reluctant and closed. Upon entry, there are fine tannins present with stewed red fruit that would pair pleasantly with all kind of hearty fare such as roast beef or boar. There is also a medium finish with the red fruit living on for 30 seconds or more. Some finesse present with streaky spice and cedar hidden in the dominant red fruit mixture. A decent Pauillac from a decent vintage. Cellar for another 2 to 3 years and try again.
Another 2006 5th growth from the cellar. The bouquet is Cabernet-dominant with a blackberry and currant scent sprinkled here and there with graphite. On the palate, there is some residual tannin, although the melange is balanced with lots of red fruit. Fruit depth is a little weak (a victim of the vintage no doubt) with a shorter finish than expected. A typical Paulliac from an average vintage and worthy. Drink now through 2015. 88 points.

Lively, with good lift and floral aromatics followed by a fresh mix of red cherry, black cherry, red currant and black currant. Nice tarry edge creeps in on the finish.-J.M. Wine Spectator. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 2011 Haut Bages Liberal 1500ml
72% cabernet sauvignon and 28% merlot. Planted on 30 hectares half of which is located next to Chateau Latour. Yields were 42hl/ha. A lovely nose of cassis raspberry and a touch of new oak hints that this is a wine of extreme complexity and elegance and the flavors in the mouth are bright silky and lively. Tasting great today as the tannins are supremely smooth and integrated. This is an estate to pay close attention to in 2010 as this wine is tremendous! John Sweeney.

Medium-dark ruby. Fruity bright aromas of red cherry red berries and flowers complicated by cedar and graphite. Then light and lively in the mouth with strawberry raspberry and smoky dark cherry flavors complicated by hints of white pepper and gunflint. The finish features a lingering floral note and chewy tannins that will need some time to resolve but seem polished enough to guarantee a bright future. This is an excellent classically styled Haut-Bages Liberal just a step below the first
Concentrated tannins very rich very firm very dry at this stage. There is a more juicy character underneath offering the potential of rich berry fruits. There s a new wood smoky aftertaste. Wine Enthusiast.
