What to Expect
Merlot has gotten a bad rap as of late but there is no denying the wine's appeal. Packed with deep, dark berry fruit and nuanced hints of cocoa, herb and earth with a soft structure. Its velvety texture makes Merlot instantly appealing and an obvious alternative to similar, more tannic Bordeaux varieties.
Winemakers Notes
TASTING NOTES At Hartwell, the 2004 growing season began unusually early; we saw bud break come the week of March 8. Relatively cool summer temperatures meant for good color development and proper physiological ripeness. A sustained heat wave from September 4 through September 13 accelerated the ripening, and made for a compressed harvest with yields even lower than predicted. Rating: 89/100 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 132, May/June 2007 Bright full ruby. Aromas of currant, plum, mocha, brown spices, menthol and licorice, with a floral topnote. Lush, pliant and sweet, with soil-inflected flavors of cassis, tobacco leaf and loam. Finishes with suave tannins and very good length. Satisfying, seamless merlot.
Rating: 93/100 - As reviewed by Vinfolio in Issue 110 Clearly one of the tastiest Merlot to come out of the Napa Valley since the debut Blackbird 2003 (VF98). Hartwell winemaker, Benoit Touquette, and consultant Andy Erickson, have dialed in excellent richness and definition to this 100% Merlot, 100% estate wine. The nose is finely formed showing aromas of black cherry, and spicy blackberry compote. The palate is supple, with interwoven layers of blackberry, chocolate and spice. Good acidity keeps the wine from feeling heavy.
