Hartford Zinfandel Russian River Valley Old Vine 2016

Winemaker's Notes:

The Hartford Russian River Valley Zinfandel is a blend of old-vine, dry-farmed and low-yielding Zinfandel vineyards from the Russian River Valley. These old vineyards (average vineyard age is over 100 years) offer an impressive articulation of this idiosyncratic varietal. Zinfandel grown in the Russian River Valley is distinctive due to a cool maritime influence. Bright, natural acidity and vibrant fruit aromas and flavors are a result of typically cool, fog-laden nights and warm days. These dry-farmed vineyards, planted on low-fertility soils, consistently produce wines of exceptional density and extraction. Not yet reviewed; 2015 vintage rated 94 points and 'Top 100 Wines of 2017 (#21)' by Wine Spectator.

This is definitely a Russian River Zin! Good fruit up front, strawberry, raspberry and a bit of pepper in the finish. Good wine for the price.

Another tasty, velvet-textured Hartford Zin. But at least in this tasting, the '05 displayed only a fraction of the depth and richness of prior vintages. Ripe plum and cherry aromas and flavors, the usual Hartford seamless mouth-feel, but with a medium-body Pinot Noir-like weight and just not the full poop we're used to in the Hartford Zins.

Not Hartford's best. Good by all means but 2005 was not the best CA had to offer

This is the sixth vintage of our wildly popular Russian River Valley AVA Zinfandel. This old-vine Zinfandel provides alluring aromas of blackberry, sweet pipe tobacco, black pepper and anise, complemented by flavors reminiscent of fresh-baked blackberry pie with allspice, anise and caramel notes on the finish. Stunningly rich and concentrated, our 2005 Russian River Valley Zinfandel has incredible definition of fruit and sweet luscious tannins. To preserve exotic spice and sweet berry flavors, we use the same gentle handling techniques for making Zinfandel that we use with Pinot Noir.
