Hartford Family Winery Hartford Zinfandel Fanucchi Wood Road Vineyard 2008

Member Review by WineborkDotCom:

If there's a doubt in your mind that top Zinfandels can stand with the world's best wines, you just need to try this one. (Of course at $50/bottle or more, it had better be good.). This wine has tremendous power and richness yet is beautifully balanced and in control. Deep, complex nose starts with raspberry compote, currants, chocolate, charcoal, spice, but over time a whole range of dark berries and savory spices floats through. In the mouth, there is some detectable heat from the alcohol when the wine is first opened, but this quickly disappears into the ocean of flavor. Despite its density, it doesn't come across as heavy or clumsy in the mouth, but rather regal and seamless. It actually goes very well with rich main courses. Spectacular Zinfandel.

[$39] ripe blackberry, blueberry; blackberry liqueur, chocolate. Among the many great offerings we agreed this was the best.

The 101-year old Fanucchi-Wood Road Vineyard is located on seven acres off Wood Road in the Russian River Valley AVA of Sonoma County. It is dry-farmed and has been hand-tended by the Fanucchi family for the last 35 years. The old vines on these soils produce small Zinfandel berries with bright, concentrated cherry and blackberry fruit flavors. At optimum ripeness, the fruit makes a big, intense, long-lived Zinfandel of unique personality. Only 235 cases were produced of this rich concentrated Zin. Aged 11 months in 55% new French oak, Robert Parker scored it 95 points saying "There are nearly 300 cases of the 2009 Zinfandel Fanucchi-Wood Road Vineyard, another century old vine Zinfandel. The most concentrated, lavishly rich, exuberant offering in this portfolio, it boasts a dense ruby/purple color in addition to an extra gear or two as well as abundant amounts of boysenberry, blueberry and black raspberry fruit intermixed with spice, pepper and hints of wood. With beautiful purity and vivaciousness, this prodigious Zinfandel is about as good as it gets for this varietal. Drink this opulent, flamboyant Zin over the next 5-7 years." Extremely Limited!
