Hartford Court Pinot Noir Russian River Valley Sonoma 2013

External Review by WineExpress.com:

Hartford Family Winery produces outstanding Sonoma County Pinot Noirs from prime locations throughout the county. This 2013 Hartford Court Russian River Valley Pinot Noir comes from a collection of small vineyards located throughout the Russian River Valley AVA. These vineyards are a combination of Estate properties such as Fog Dance, Hailey’s Block, MacLean’s Block and Arrendell, as well as a handful of neighboring vineyards, located in the heart of the Russian River Valley. The sites express the essence of the Russian River Valley by showcasing the best of the sub-regions including Green Valley, Laguna Ridge and Sebastopol Hills. Each sub-region brings complexity and character to the final blend. All the grapes were hand harvested with hand sorting of both clusters and berries at the winery. A pre-fermentation cold soakwas followed by inoculation with indigenous yeast in small open top fermenters. The wine aged for 11 months in all French oak barrels (30% new) and underwent minimal or no fining and filtration. It shows Aromas of blackberries, blueberry, and nutmeg are followed by flavors of Bing cherries, wild raspberries, dark plum and allspice. The dense entry is followed by a sweet and juicy mouth feel, supported by acidity, silky tannins and a subtle earthy finish.

High Personality Wines Making delicious wines of high personality is directly related to the difficult locations of our vineyard sources, the limited production of our bottlings and the varietals we use. "Character through adversity" is an expression that we believe applies to people and grapevines and surviving adversity builds character, and personality, in both. Single-Vineyard and Limited Bottlings Small and low-yielding vineyards deliver meager amounts of expressive and personality-rich wine. Our single-vineyard Hartford Court Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays total as few as 93 cases up to about 800 cases. Likewise, our Hartford Old-Vine Zinfandels are produced in small quantities. Pinot Noir We love Pinot Noir and in many years make about eight of them with fruit from the Russian River Valley, Sonoma Coast, Green Valley, Carneros and Anderson Valley appellations. We feel that Pinot Noir makes the most seductive red wine, notable for its supple, silky texture. Pinot Noir is also known for expressing vineyard site characteristics in a transparent manner. Chardonnay Cool climate Sonoma Coast and Russian River Valley Chardonnay vineyards are singularly expressive. Those that are planted with multiple clones, specially matched to their sites, also reflect the distinctive terroir in these high-risk, high-reward locations. Old-Vine Zinfandel Our 80-100 year old Zinfandel vineyards are irreplaceable treasures - and we source our vineyard designated Russian River Valley Zinfandels (150-500 cases) from some of the oldest Zinfandel vineyards in California. The complexity and depth of flavors from these vineyards produce the most consistently bold and unctuous Zinfandels found anywhere. Read less
