What to Expect

The classic Bordeaux blends rely on either Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon for the bulk of the wine with additions of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec helping to add complexity, color, body and structure to the finished wine.

H. William Harlan, the founder of Harlan Estate, had a vision. Simply put, he was determined to produce a California "First Growth". It had a pretty mute nose out of the gates but then developed liquor-like aromas of dark raspberry and blueberry. The palate was hot and very syrupy. Major gobs here. No tannin really at first but then they struck after around 20 minutes opened. The tannins were the best part of the wine. Ripe and not too sweet and perfectly proportioned. But that's the inly thing I liked. The finish was decent but not particularly long. Have had the '93, '94, '97, '00 and '01 and still just do not see what all the fuss is about. Dark berry and earth on the nose. Tastes of black cherry, blueberry, anise, black currant and earth. Firm tannins. Good depth and length. Elegant finish. Very nice.
