Haras de Pirque 'Hussonet' Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauv 2014

External Review:

Haras de Pirque is a union of two passions in a unique place where thoroughbred horse breeding and fine wine making come together. In Pirque, Chile in the foothills of the Andes they planted 290 acres of vineyards in 1992, mainly Cabernet Sauvignon and Carménère. They produce outstanding wines and name them for their famous racehorses like this Hussonet Gran Reserva Cab. Owned by the famed Antinori Family of Tuscany their winemaking team led by Renzo Cotarella is in charge of the whole process. Grapes were hand-picked end of April. The special parcels selected for Hussonet undergo careful hand management throughout the year to produce grapes of very high quality. 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc, the lots a vinified separately and the wine is aged 12 months in French oak barrels. It is bottled unfined and unfiltered. The wine shows herb and spice notes with hints of tobacco, cassis and black plums along with mineral notes, good complexity and a lingering finish.

In 1991, after a highly successful business career in Chile's private sector, entrepreneur Eduardo Matte acquired an estate that he would later name Haras de Pirque, in the southwestern part of Pirque, a prestigious winegrowing area situated in the Maipo Valley. Eduardo Matte's objectives included launching a major winery project, and expanding and improving the existing thoroughbred farm. The property- today covering 600 hectares - gently ascends the lower slopes of a spur of the Andes Mountains. In these foothills, between 1992 and 1993, one hundred and twenty hectares of vineyards were planted, mainly with the reds Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Carmenère, and the whites Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Haras de Pirque's name honors the country´s oldest thoroughbred breeding stud, founded in 1892.The stud has four extensively pedigreed stallions that have sired exceptional offspring. The farm's success is reflected by a long succession of trophies won in the nation's main horseracing events and an unrivaled leadership in all of the sport's local categories: broodmare sires, stallions and general standings. In addition, the haras is a prominent supplier for breeders and owners in South and North America, and maintains approximately 30 racehorses in the national competition circuit. Along with winegrowing and thoroughbred raising, Eduardo Matte gives free rein to his other passions, one of which is the collecting of old carriages, all drawn by suitably bred horses. The collection currently features 18 models with a stable of 30 horses that, together with four thoroughbred stallions and nearly two hundred mares and foals, trot and gallop through Haras de Pirque's wide, green pastures Read less
