What to Expect

California has long struggled with Pinot Noir. Finding the right vineyards for this most fickle of grape, one that enjoys a cool growing season yet needs warmth close to harvest to fully ripen, has proven a challenge in such a sunny state. Cooler areas eventually became identified; the Santa Rita Hills, Russian River Valley and Mendocino's Anderson valley are all prime spots for Pinot Noir in California. Unlike the lighter colored and sometimes delicate Pinots of Burgundy, California produces many rich, deep Pinots full of slightly chewy dark berry and cherry fruits with hints of cola, Asian spices and forest floor frequently adding complexity.

The result of the unique growing season and the evolution of the winemaking is a wine that has apowerful and nuanced aromatic presence and retains the structural elements that have predicated thecellar-worthiness of Hanzell Pinot Noir. Tea leaf, cigar tobacco, espresso, blackberry, cured meat and wet cedar give this vintagea dark aromatic tone. The aroma gives the impression of a warm, humid forest, ratherthan the dry mineral signature of previous vintages. A firm grip from the abundant tanninholds the palate tightly and provides endurance to the deceptively lush feel.

Hanzell makes one of the best Pinot Noirs in all of California. The beautiful vineyards are perched high above Sonoma. Dark cherry, cigar tobacco, blackberry, earthy. Firm tannins yet lush. This one is made to age...though I could not wait and thoroughly enjoyed it.
