WS 91 Pts - Tight and flinty, with mineral, lean apple and spice flavors that are slow to unwind, but gain depth and personality as they do. The floral aroma carries over nicely to the palate, expanding on the finish. Rated 90+
Winemaker's Notes:
In 20 plus years of winemaking, I had never tasted grapes with such intensity. Despite the diminutive size of many of the clusters, they had explosively powerful flavor! As always during harvest, I was a bit anxious; however, each time Bob Sessions exclaimed from the sorting table, “gorgeous! ... beautiful! … yummy! …” my confidence grew until there was no doubt that this indeed would be an exemplary vintage. Our winemaking traditions referred to now as the “Hanzell Way” comprise carefully controlled fermentation and judicious use of French oak. Of course, the Hanzell Way is still alive and well! With a continued commitment to our rigorous classification process, only the best lots and barrels are selected for our Estate wines. This exceptional vintage has afforded us the opportunity to elevate our 2008 Estate Chardonnay, honoring our commitment to Grand Cru quality.
Tasting Notes:
The attractive, high-toned aromas are of citrus blossoms, pear, green apple, vanilla, lemon oil, anise, clove, graphite, and clean mineral. A bit tightly wound initially, the mouth-watering acidity belies the full body and concentrated, sweet lemony fruit. As the wine opens up, the inherent richness and flavor intensity rise to demonstrate the quality and longevity of the vintage. The unfolding flavors are of ripe apple, citrus, clove and caramel on a long, mineral-laden finish. Decanting one to two hours before serving is recommended.

Aged 12 months in French Oak.
