Hamilton Russell Vineyards - the most southerly wine estate in Africa and the closest to the sea - is located in the cool, maritime Walker Bay wine appellation, in a beautiful valley behind the old fishing village of Hermanus. The estate specialises in producing highly individual, terroir driven Pinot Noir and Chardonnay which are widely regarded as the best in South Africa and among the best in the New World. Founder, Tim Hamilton Russell purchased the undeveloped 170 hectare property in 1975, after an exhaustive search for the most southerly site on which to make South Africas top cool climate wines from a selection of noble varieties. His son Anthony, who took over in 1991, narrowed the range to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay only and registered Hamilton Russell Vineyards as an Estate, committing to work only with grapes from their terroir. Anthony and winemaker Hannes Storm are completely dedicated to expressing the personality of the Hamilton Russell Vineyards terroir in their wines. Tiny yields and strong worldwide demand keep their elegant, individual, estate grown Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in very short supply. Grapes: 100% Estate grown Pinot Noir from 23 hectares of vines. The vines are divided into 9 individual vineyards, each with their own distinct personality. Notes: Consistent with the character of their terroir, this Pinot Noir combines Old World elegance and expression of origin with New World forward fruit and immediate appeal.Hamilton Russell is extremely careful in avoiding harsh, dry tannins and prominent oak character. Serve: At room temperature to accompany roast or grilled red meats and rich pasta dishes. Colour: Light garnet Taste: Finely oaked, with aromas and flavours of raspberry, cherry and plum, with hints of game, develop to a deeper more complex, earthy, mushroom character with bottle age. The Pinot-flavoured ripe sweetness is held together by fair tannins and perfect balance.

This wine starts off bright and vibrant with aromas of red-cherry skin red currant and plum with touches of toasted oak and earth. The fruit flavors intensity on the palate with additional accents of tea leaves cocoa nib and black pepper that carry through to the medium-length finish. Surprisingly firmly structured with gripping tannins and pronounced acidity. Drink 20142018. -L.B. Wine Enthusiast.

Delicate yet fruit forward, with strawberry, cherry and sweet spice flavors. The wine ends with firm, ripe tannins and a malt and toffee finish. A great wine to have with ahi tuna seared rare, veggie burgers on seeded rolls, and colorful mixed green salads topped with grilled chicken and cherry tomatoes.

Bright and vibrant with lush summer fruit flavors, the Pleasures Pinot Noir is the perfect wine for when you just don’t know what you’re in the mood for. Light and easy, with soft tannins and excellent balance. Terrific as an aperitif, but also works well with light chicken dishes, tuna steaks or veggie burgers.

Winemaker's Notes:

"The sublime 2010 Pinot Noir is aged for 10 months in oak, of which 44% was new and the remainder used. It has a ripe bouquet of redcurrant, strawberry and Morello that shows no signs of under-ripeness that Hamilton’s Pinots occasionally exhibit due to leaf-roll. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe fleshy redcurrant and cranberry fruit that is underpinned by extremely fine tannins. This has wonderful build in the mouth and the finish is exuberant, almost feisty! This is an audacious Pinot Noir from one of South Africa’s top estates. Drink now-2020. Bravo to Hamilton Russell, who have produced an outstanding Pinot Noir in 2010, one of the finest New World expressions of the grape variety that I have encountered. When Hamilton Russell gets it right, they hit bullseye...95" WA 12/12 "Ripe, juicy and nicely compact, with plum sauce, blackberry and cherry skin notes wound at the core while mouthwatering anise and singed apple wood notes run along the edges. Possesses impressive cut and persistence...92" WS 11/12
