Hamilton Russell Chardonnay Walker Bay 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

Hamilton Russell Vineyards - one of the most southerly wine Estates in Africa and one of the closest to the sea - is located in the beautiful, cool, maritime Hemel-en-Aarde Valley appellation, just behind the old fishing village of Hermanus. The Estate specialises in producing highly individual, terroir driven Pinot noir and Chardonnay, which are widely regarded as the best in South Africa and among the best in the New World. Founder, Tim Hamilton Russell purchased the undeveloped 170 hectare property in 1975, after an exhaustive search for the most southerly site on which to make South Africa’s top cool climate wines from a selection of noble varieties. This is a tight, minerally style of Chardonnay with classic Hamilton Russell vineyards length and complexity. The wine has bright, natural acidity and depth indicative of the extremely low yields used to produce this elegant wine.

Founder, Tim Hamilton Russell purchased the undeveloped 170 hectare property in 1975, after an exhaustive search for the most southerly site on which to make South Africa?s top cool climate wines from a selection of noble varieties. His son Anthony Hamilton Russell, who took over in 1991 (finally buying the property in 1994), narrowed the range to Pinot noir and Chardonnay only and registered Hamilton Russell Vineyards as an Estate, committing to work only with grapes from their terroir. Extensive soil research initiated in 1994 identified 52 hectares of stony, clay-rich, shale-derived soil as optimal for the individual, origin expressive style they aim for and all plantings have now been limited to this soil type. Anthony with winemaker Hannes Storm and viticulturist Johan Montgomery are completely dedicated to expressing the personality of the Hamilton Russell Vineyards terroir in their wines. Tiny yields and intense worldwide demand keep the elegant, highly individual, Estate grown Pinot noir and Chardonnay in very short supply. Read less

This is obviously oaky on the nose with notes of cedar, toasted dark bread and butter cream, but the underlying apple and melon fruit is almost as assertive. On entry, this shows a rare combination of power and transparency, and while the oak is assertive the fruit is almost keeping apace. Toasty, nutty notes on the palate are underpinned by rich apple fruit. A touch of kiwi and green melon on the back end lead to a beautifully defined finish that shows oak and mineral notes under a fan of green fruit. This is really very fine. 93pts

Light gold. The attractive and complex nose showcases elegant notes of citrus, peach, brioche and a hint of white flowers. Extremely well focused on the palate, this is precise and balanced with bold flavors of orchard fruit and citrus yet a sense ... John Perry. ôHamilton Russell put South African Pinot Noir on the map. Their first plantings were back in 1976...Their Chardonnay debuted in the early 1990s...Tasting verticals of their most recent vintages, my own impression is that their Chardonnay continues to rank amongst South Africa's finest... Cropped at 16.86 hectoliter per hectare and raised in 35% new oak barrels, the 2010 Chardonnay is more reserved than the 2009 but retains very fine delineation with hints of grapefruit and nectarine. The palate has a very attractive hazelnut and lanolin-tinged entry. It has wonderful definition and a taut, citrus finish that is long in the mouth.
