Hamilton Russell Chardonnay Hemel-En-Aarde Valley 2013

Winemaker's Notes:

"A tight, minerally wine with classic Hamilton Russell Vineyards length and complexity. Unusually prominent pear and lime fruit aromas and flavours are brought beautifully into focus by a tight line of bright natural acid and a long, dry minerality. An elegant, yet textured and intense wine with a strong personality of both place and vintage."-Producer

Hamilton Russell Vineyards is one of the most southerly wine Estates in Africa and one of the closest to the sea - is located in the beautiful, cool, maritime Hemel-en-Aarde Valley appellation, just behind the old fishing village of Hermanus. The Estate specialises in producing highly individual, terroir driven Pinot noir and Chardonnay, which are widely regarded as the best in South Africa and among the best in the New World. Founder, Tim Hamilton Russell purchased the undeveloped 170 hectare property in 1975, after an exhaustive search for the most southerly site on which to make South Africa?s top cool climate wines from a selection of noble varieties. His son Anthony Hamilton Russell, who took over in 1991 (finally buying the property in 1994), narrowed the range to Pinot noir and Chardonnay only and registered Hamilton Russell Vineyards as an Estate, committing to work only with grapes from their terroir. Extensive soil research initiated in 1994 identified 52 hectares of stony, clay-rich, shale-derived soil as optimal for the individual, origin expressive style they aim for and all plantings have now been limited to this soil type. Anthony with winemaker Hannes Storm and viticulturist Johan Montgomery are completely dedicated to expressing the personality of the Hamilton Russell Vineyards terroir in their wines. Tiny yields and intense worldwide demand keep the elegant, highly individual, Estate grown Pinot noir and Chardonnay in very short supply. Read less

This is obviously oaky on the nose with notes of cedar, toasted dark bread and butter cream, but the underlying apple and melon fruit is almost as assertive. On entry, this shows a rare combination of power and transparency, and while the oak is assertive the fruit is almost keeping apace. Toasty, nutty notes on the palate are underpinned by rich apple fruit. A touch of kiwi and green melon on the back end lead to a beautifully defined finish that shows oak and mineral notes under a fan of green fruit. This is really very fine. 93pts

Very full and round wine, great body with toast, coconut and vanilla and walnut smaller notes of herbs and fruit. A smooth chardonnay.

Tightly wound, this exhibits a serious core of glazed pear, fig, apple, plantain and brioche notes, lined with mineral and honeysuckle hints and accented by nicely beaded acidity. This should be a beauty when it unwinds fully. Best from 2014 through 2020.

Styled like a sophisticated French Burgundy, with light, well-integrated oak and subtle fruit. Very elegant and food-friendly.

Good full yellow. Wonderfully complex aromas of pear, wild herbs, sweet butter, smoke and tropical fruits; showed an iodiney minerality with air. Concentrated and harmonious but firm-edged, with brisk lemony acidity framing the very youthful flavors of stone fruits and minerals. Conveys a powerful impression of intensity without weight, like the best white Burgundies. Very young but smooth on the long, peach aftertaste. Outstanding potential here for a chardonnay that is often South Africa’s best.

The aptly named Pleasures Chardonnay is a delightfully mellow medium-bodied white, featuring red apple and cantaloupe fruit notes. The mouthfeel is creamy and soft, with hints of almond and lychee.
