Halter Ranch White Rhone Blend Paso Robles Cotes de Paso Blanc 2010

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This is very fruity on the nose with a sweet character. Lots of sweet pear, peach and slightly tropical fruit notes with a floral accent. Very smooth on entry if a bit loose, this delivers a nice, gentle mouth feel along with lightly sweet pear and peach flavors, with an intensely floral inner mouth perfume. Nice minerality flairs on the finish, which is fairly long and slightly bitter on the finale. Just needs a bit more acid verve to be a bit more refreshing. 88pts

The beautiful Victorian farmhouse Smith built in 1885 remains a Westside Paso Robles landmark. In 2000, Swiss-born businessman Hansjörg Wyss fell in love with the Paso Robles area and purchased 900 acres of the original ranch, intent on producing the best grapes and wines possible from our ideally situated site. Fervently committed to quality, we have focused on developing our estate vineyard, renovating the historic barns and farmhouse, and designing a new state-of-the art winery. Our vineyard is planted to many different grape varieties – both Bordeaux and Rhone-style, plus Zinfandel, Tannat and Tempranillo. The vines are planted on steep, south-facing slopes reaching 1800 feet in elevation and boasting soils rich in limestone, a feature of many of the world’s finest vineyards. High-density plantings, multiple clones and rootstocks, and low yields enable us to produce fruit of superb quality. We are committed to the environment. In 2008 Halter Ranch was designated Certified Sustainable in all our farming and winemaking operations. Read less

Nice clear straw color. It really is straw color--a faint tint of orange. Very floral, fruity nose--I don't smell honey, but I think of honey. Pretty neutral on the tip of the tongue. Things don't start to happen until further back. I get some fruit--pears--and, also, some mineral to rein in the fruit. We're having grilled chicken for dinner tonight and this may or may not be the best match for grilled chicken. Oh, but the research must continue. US$21.99 at Wine Country in Signal Hill.
