Hagen Heights Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Hagen Heights Vineyard 2003

Winemaker's Notes:

Notes on the Hagen Heights Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2003 : WINE ENTHUSIAST REVIEW: 91 POINTS A very good Napa Cab. Rich and ripe in blackberry, cassis, cherry and new oak flavors, it's dry and balanced, with firm, sweet tannins and a nice bite of acidity. Wine Enthusiast July 2007WINEMAKER NOTES: The Hagen Heights 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon is a worthy successor to their fabulous inaugural 2002 vintage wine. The 2003 offers a stunning deep ruby color. At first the aromas are slightly reticent, but within moments the wine opens up to display rich dark fruit notes of blackberry, cherry and plum, along with fragrant wood spice. With a few more minutes in the glass, the wine's gorgeous fruit comes to the forefront and appears deeper and riper. Like the 2002, this is stylish Napa Cabernet without the typical jammy character that marks some of the Cabernet from the warmer northern part of the valley. Nonetheless the 2003 is quite full-bodied and mouth filling - even more so than the 2002. The tannins are strong (as is typical for Cabernet) yet supple in the nature and beautifully integrated with the concentrated fruit flavors. All in all, this is another great wine to drink now or to stow away in the cellar for further improvement over the next 5-8 years. In addition, it will easily hold another 10 years beyond that.HAGEN HEIGHTS NAPA VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2003

As the French are fond of saying the quality begins with the very specific terroir or soils and weather of where the grapes are grown. Hagen Heights Vineyard is located at the southeast end of California’s great Napa Valley. The soils are part volcanic cinder and part creek bed loam. These qualities give the vines the nutrition needed, while providing excellent drainage and some “stress” during even the wettest years. Our selection for the genetic clones to be planted was based on our desire for premium “grape stock” matched to our specific soils. We planted about .8 acres of Bordeaux Cabernet Franc Clone 332, 3 acres of U.C. Davis Cabernet Sauvignon Clone 8 and 5 acres of Bordeaux Cabernet Sauvignon Clone 337, all grown on 101-14 rootstock. Because we are located only about 9 miles from the San Francisco Bay, we average temperatures that are 5 to 10 degrees cooler than many of the famous “up valley” red wine vineyards. The great advantage of our “micro climate” is the 2 to 3 weeks of additional “hang time” our grapes have to ripen. This gives us the ability to more carefully “time” our harvest to exact the optimum sugar and other qualities contributing to the “cool climate” style of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon that we believe our vineyard is best suited to produce. Heather comes to us with a Masters Degree in Enology from U.C. Davis. She was the winemaker for Mondavi in the 1980’s and 1990’s when Mondavi was leading the world in creative winemaking in terms of both technology and methodology. Heather’s 17 year tenure with Mondavi was focused on their reserve red wines. While on the Mondavi team she has also worked on harvests in Africa, Chile and Italy. Heather purchased many lots of red grapes from the Tulocay region. She was particularly impressed with the soft, subtle and complex flavors she found here. She wanted to create a wine exclusively from them. Read less
