The purity of expression here is simply magnificent with the classic assertive mineral character that suffuses this wine from beginning to end. Superbly well balanced with rich, indeed pungent, harmonious and beautifully complex flavors supported by a solid acid spine continuing into the lengthy, almost painfully intense finish. If there is a nit despite the superb raw materials, it's that this is not a particularly elegant wine, in fact it's borderline robust. That said, this is a mouthful of wine that makes a firm statement and one that should drink well for a long time.

Jean-Marc Roulot reported that he was extremely pleased with the quality of his 99s, declaring that he much prefers their elegance and raciness to his denser but heavier 98s. He noted that his yields averaged 55 hl/ha in 99 versus a range of 18 to 40 hl/ha in 98. Potential alcohols came in between 12.5 and 13.5% and Roulot stated that he chaptalized no more than a quarter percent for any of his wines and there was no acidulation.
