Gustavo Thrace Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon 2005
This is the first time that we have sourced Cabernet from the Atlas Peak area of Napa. This vineyard is at the base of Atlas Peak. We brought in 4 tons of fruit, producing just 240 cases. The harvest was interrupted by the raid that year so we harvested on two different days and then blended the finished wines together when they were both through fermentation. It was aged in new French oak barrels for 30 months. It is a big, fruit-forward wine. The lush nose opens up with aromas of cherry-cola, dark chocolate and licorice. There is a full mouth that finishes with just the right tannin management to leave your mouth dry but full of flavor, ready for the next taste. This wine will continue to improve in the bottle for the next 10 years.
Tight tannin structure and containing all the wonderful "dust" tobacco and cocoa we expect from a Rutherford single vineyard block cab. Wonderfully balanced, complex and richly structured. Decadent and delicious. Long lasting. - Tasted at Oxbow tasting room 4/22/10
Aromas of cherry cola and dark chocolate. Big, fruit forward wine. Lovely cab fruit on the palate. Bursts forth in the mouth and evolves through every part of the palate and even after it's swallowed. - Tasted at Oxbow tasting room 4/22/10
Fruit forward with aromas of cherry cola, dark chocolate and licorice. Full bodied with good tannin structure. Deep, rich and toasty. Very nice! - Tasted at GustavoThrace 12/31/10
I originally tried this at their tasting room in Napa, and tried a bottle again recently from my cellar. Definitely a big, fruit forward Rutherford Cabernet. Full bodied and lush. Everything you want and expect from a Cab. from that area, but at a more modest price. Gustavo Brambila, the winemaker for Gustavo Thrace, worked for many years with Mike Grgich both at Chateau Montelena and at Grgich Hills Winery. He definitely knows what he is doing and his wines reflect that.
