At Gundlach Bundschu we define sustainability broadly, seeking not only to be responsible stewards of the land, but also to preserve this land for future generations of our family. There is nothing static about this view of sustainability—it requires innovation and action. We believe that preserving the unique ecosystem of Rhinefarm is essential to wine quality, as well as to the health of our family and business. The introduction of beneficial predators, from owls and bluebirds to beetles and mites, and intensive pest monitoring allows us to eliminate all regular use of pesticides, use no pre-emergent herbicides and limit the use of aggressive herbicides. Cover crops contribute vital diversity and nutrition to the soils, and we utilize registered organic compounds and practices whenever possible. Vigilant management of our acute deficit irrigation program and water reclamation ponds promote conservation, recycling 70% of winery water. We use biodiesel to fuel our tractors, and continually seek ways to enhance environmental quality and make the most efficient use of resources. Like many of his family members before him, Jeff Bundschu is striving to redefine the estate vision to meet the industry challenges of the times. With superb vineyards and a talented team of employees, he is excited about the future of the estate. “Each generation of my family that has stood on this dirt felt compelled to looking at the vines and wines with a fresh eye. Our winery’s evolution is destined—families evolve. Land evolves. Plants evolve. Palates evolve.” Equally important to Bundschu is the preservation of the open-minded and spirited culture with which the winery has long been associated. “Our life here at Gundlach Bundschu, with its wine and good people, has always been about laughter, hard work, enjoying the inspiration that comes from being in such a beautiful place, and sharing what we have with our friends and neighbors.” Tasting Room Our intimate tasting room can only accomodate small groups, and we request groups of eight or more reserve a private tour for your visit. I’m generally not a big fan of Gewurtz. Generally I find them dull and flat. This wine proved me wrong. Aromas of leche and grapefruit and some spice. Lots of layers of fruit flavors including grapefruit, leche and apricot. Good acid, not flat!

Nice aromas, not sweet but not too dry. Really enjoyed it. Tasted at the winery and finally found a local shop that sells it.

Wine Tasting NotesThe assertive aromas and flavors of this Alsatian-style Gewurztraminer are reminiscent of lychee and almond blossom. Full-bodied and bone-dry, the bright finish offers lingering lemon-lime flavors, a hint of nuttiness and classic varietal spice. Enjoy Gewurztraminer as an aperitif, or pair with a wide variety of cuisine including Indian, Chinese and Thai and the classic pairing of roast turkey and ham.

Tasting Notes:

Fragrant aromas of orange blossom, tangerine, white flowers and a wisps of coriander. Crisp yet complex flavors of ruby grapefruit, fresh lychee, kiwi and meyer lemon with notes of warm spice and lush texture. Fresh fruit flavors lead to a dry, vibrant finish that lasts for a long time. Wonderfully bright and fresh in its youth, this classic, dry Gewürztraminer will continue to develop complexity up to fifteen years from vintage.

The cool 2010 growing season allowed for extended hang time producing elegant wines with concentrated flavors, bright fruit and balanced natural acidity.
