Gunderloch Riesling Kabinett "Jean Baptiste" 2015

Winemaker's Notes:

"Flinty and fresh on the nose, with a bright and stony fruit aroma, the 2015 Riesling Kabinett Feinherb Jean Baptiste is light and filigreed, round and piquant, as well as refreshingly salty in the finish. A delicious Kabinett."- Stephan Reihnardt, Wine Advocate

Gunderloch:
Our great - great grandfather, Carl Gunderloch, a banker from Mainz, founded the Gunderloch estate in 1890. He bought excellent grand cru vineyard sites, NACKENHEIM ROTHENBERG, and became one of the pioneers of quality wine making on the Rhine River. Agnes and Fritz Hasselbach have been managing the 30 acres of vineyards in Nackenheim and Nierstein since 1979 and are the fifth generation owners.

This wine was available at the Vancouver International Wine Festival. It has all the tart characteristics of a typical Nackenheim wine with sour apple nose and gooseberry on the palate. A very acceptable quaff with some evolution occurring in terms of gasoline notes. A worthy wine for summer sipping. 85 points.

Compared to the monster wine of 2007, the 2008 Jean Baptiste is a more classic Kabinett with a touch of sweetness perfectly balanced by cracking acidity. At just 10,5%, it's a perfect allround Riesling for almost any occasion. Goes really well with curry dishes.

Pure, focused nectarine, apricot and grapefruit flavors are matched to vivid acidity and a bright, refreshing finish. Drink now through 2019.

Big for a kabinett, yet round and juicy, with a vibrant cast to its peach and mineral flavors. Picks up a spicy note on the finish. Drink now through 2005.

Though this has richness and balance, the flavors could be more vivid and focused. Light peach and apple flavors show moderate length. Drink now through 2012.

Fritz Hasselbach, owner of Weingut Gunderloch, is not only one of the premier producers of the Rheinhessen, he's also incredibly dedicated to making wines of terroir. The red, iron-rich soils show through on the palate. Off-dry on the palate, full of peaches and yellow plums.
