Guiseppe Rinaldi Barolo Riserva Brunate 1985

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

A touch of VA is obvious on the nose but it offers great lift to the floral aromatics. This is otherwise gentle on the nose with a slightly gamey edge to the perfumed wild berry tones that gain intensity and depth with air. It reveals s slight chinato note that adds to the perfumy nature of the nose and offers up hints of cola and panettone, giving this a sweet edge. The entry picks up that sweetness which gives the sour cherry fruit nice depth. The acidity is perfectly integrated, as are the tannins, allowing this to waft across the palate and onto the finish where it picks up some dried herb notes and a long finale of fruit gentle touched with cinnamon spice. 93pts

Francesco Rinaldi & Figli:
The company was founded in 1870, when our grandfather, Giovanni, left Diano d'Alba and walked to Barolo, where he had just inherited a vineyard and a house. As he was a fine wine-dresser, he was immediately conquered by the subtle charm of these hills. Some years later he was supported by the help of his sons and today the business is run by his descedants, who love this evocative little world jus like he did.

a stinky touch of funky slavonian oak notes right out of the bottle and a touch of oxidative sweetness that reinforced the sweet anise tones that initially dominated the nose. Growing elements of earth, sand and iron added to the aromatics with a touch of menthol lurking. In the mouth this was rich and round with chewy, slightly matte fruit that was dark and spicy with licorice, earthy and savory notes adding to the wild frutti del bosco palate. Nice length and sustain on the finish added to the appeal. A solid showing but this may be slipping a bit as this lacked some of the richness of previous bottles. 92pts 2009-2019
