Guigal la Mouline Cote Rotie 2001
The Guigal family owns vineyards in Condrieu and in the Côte-Rôtie with illustrious plots producing wines such as ‘La Doriane’ in Condrieu, the famous growths of the Côte-Rôtie ‘La Mouline’, ‘La Turque’ and ‘La Landonne’, Côte-Rôtie Château d’Ampuis, Hermitage ‘Ex-Voto’, produced only in the great vintages and Saint-Joseph ‘Lieu-Dit Saint-Joseph’ in red and white, as well as the famous Saint-Joseph red 'Vignes de l’Hospice'. These wines have each become flagships of their appellations. In the cellars of the Guigal estate in Ampuis, the northern appellations of the Rhône Valley are produced and aged. These are the appellations of Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Hermitage, Saint-Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage. The great appellations of the Southern Rhône; Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, Tavel and Côtes-du-Rhône are also aged in the Ampuis cellars. This famous Côte-Rôtie red is a feminine wine with voluptuous silky texture and intense aromas. Ruby red with red vermillion tints, the nose is of small red fruits, blackberry and floral violet aromas. The palate is intensely aromatic, powerful but full of finesse. Greatly expressive of the terroir. Robert Parker 94-97 points.

Made since the 1966 vintage, La Mouline is the oldest of Guigal's three Côte-Rôtie single-vineyard cru. The 1999, produced from 2.5 acres, shows great opulence and rich texture and a layer of mocha, tobacco and blackberries. Long and sweet finish, with caressing tannins and mineral, smoky and toasted aromas. Best from 2006 to 2020.
A stunning nose of fig and black currant confiture draws you into a dense but velvety palate of blackberry, mocha, vanilla, mineral and tar flavors that course through a finish with fully embedded acidity and very refined tannins. Awesome length here. Hard to resist now, but better to cellar. Drink now through 2030.
The 2000 Cote-Rotie La Mouline, while lighter than the previous three vintages, possesses a deep ruby color in addition to a sweet perfume of white flowers, licorice, caramel, black raspberries, and currants. It is a medium-bodied, compactly built La Mouline with good fruit, low acidity, and an up-front, forward charm. It should drink well for 8-12 years. Drink 2003-2015.
A Syrah wine from Rhone in France. 2001 Guigal Cote Rotie la Mouline 750ml
Terrific combination of the best of both worlds in Cote-Rotie - the ripe, powerful raspberry and blackberry fruit and coffee and cocoa notes, along with the sauvage, alluring games, mineral and spice flavors. Both camps work hand-in-hand here, and take turns in extending the amazingly long finish. Best from 2006 through 2030.
Lovely, delicate, elegant Côte-Rôtie. Incredibly expressive, with the floral, cassis, black currant aromas jumping out of the glass. Medium-bodied, supple and caressing, this charmer is worth hunting down, especially for that iron and mineral terroir character. Drink now through 2010.
Every vintage has its share of bacon fat, toast, cassis, acacia flower, black raspberry, creme de cassis, and tapenade notes. A voluptuous texture, sweet tannin, and a satiny smooth demeanor are hallmarks of La Mouline, whether it's a difficult (1974) or great vintage (1999). As it ages, aromas of violets and peaches also emerge. All of the "La La" offerings (as Guigal's fans call them) are aged 42 months in 100% new Francois Freres barrels, experience minimal racking as well as sulphur, and are bottled with neither fining nor filtration. While critics call them branded wines, they always emerge from the same vineyard parcels. In response to the criticism that they are oaky, virtually no new wood can be detected in the wines after 6-8 years of cellaring.
