What to Expect

Like its neighbor across the river, Hermitage, Côte-rôtie is a small vineyard whose red wine production is based on the Syrah grape. Unlike in Hermitage, where the wine is all Syrah, some Viognier, an aromatic white grape variety, is frequently added to Côte-rôtie to help add some complexity on the nose. Literally "the roasted slope", the Côte-rôtie is a Southern-facing subtly concave hillside carved into a ridge overlooking the Rhone River. This natural amphitheatre serves to capture the warm of the passing sun and allows the grapes of Côte-rôtie to achieve an added level of richness when compared with its neighbors. This may explain why the region has been famous for wine for over two millennia. The steep slopes of the Côte-rôtie produce a rich, velvety, deep wine with subtle smoky, bacon fat and flower tinged aromatics over an opulent base of roasted blackberry and plum fruits.

Aroma of some tar and and dar fruit. This wine starts with a spash of rasperry which intesifies upon the finish Excellent balance of sweetnes, acidity, and very subtle tanins.

Very nice texture of Viognier blended with black fruits, meaty quality of Syrah. I tried an Australian version of Cote Rotie; no competition there. Great balance of acidity, tannins and flavors. Drinks very well now, but I believe an extra time could add this one more special notes,,

(90-92)The 2003 Cote-Rotie Brune et Blonde appears to be the finest example of this cuvee since the 1985 and 1983. A sumptuously-textured, rich, full-throttle effort, it possesses loads of smoky bacon fat-infused black currant and herb-tinged fruit, good body, and a heady, concentrated finish. - The Wine Advocate by Robert M. Solid and dependable, showing mild animalistic funk smoothed over by dark, earthy, baritone fruit and a few alto incursions of blackberry residue. Everything is very strictly in place here, and the wine is aging nicely.

Nice wine. The blend of Vionger & Syrah makes for a well balanced wine. The nose is perfumed from the Vionger with a flora component and candy. The fruit is on point. Cherries and dark fruit are clear and clean. The texture is nice and velvety. Great full body. Requires some decanting.
