After aging 30 months in 100% new oak the 2009 St.-Joseph Vignes de l’Hospice is a wine of extraordinary intensity. It ranks alongside some of the luxury cuvees of Chapoutier, Delas, Andre Perret and Jean-Louis Chave as one of the finest St.-Josephs of the appellation. It emerges from what may be the most remarkable vineyard from a photogenic perspective towering above the village of Tournon on an incredibly steep slope. A dense purple color is followed by copious aromas of camphor, licorice, subtle smoke, lead pencil shavings, blackberries and cassis. This is a superb wine to drink over the next 15+ years.
Bright purple. A compelling, heady bouquet of red and dark berries, violets, Szechuan peppercorn and smoky minerals. Sappy and precise, offering palate-staining raspberry preserve and cherry-cola flavors and notes of candied flowers and spicecake. Nervy and focused on a gently tannic finish that strongly echoes the raspberry and floral notes.
An exotic and flashy red, with bold espresso, melted licorice, incense and black tea aromatics rushing forth, backed by dense but focused noted of blackberry and plum pâte de fruit. The long, graphite-filled finish drips with fruit and singed wood notes, and should meld nicely in the cellar. Best from 2013 through 2023.
Dense and grippy now, with roasted alder, bittersweet ganache and freshly roasted espresso notes leading the way, though there's a very dense core of crushed plum, black currant and blackberry fruit in reserve. A gorgeous charcoal stitching takes over on the finish. Offers loads of muscle, but also terrific cut and drive through the finish. Best from 2015 through 2040.
A broad, muscular style, with a distinctive mix of roasted mesquite and apple wood out front, followed by lush raspberry confiture, crushed plum and blackberry fruit flavors. There's ample depth, with smoldering tobacco, juniper and mocha all mixed on the finish. Relies primarily on bass and pumps along nicely. Best from 2015 through 2035.
The spectacular 2009 Cote Rotie Chateau d’Ampuis boasts a dense purple color along with abundant aromas of incense, charcoal, lavender, black raspberries, lard/bacon fat, licorice and background toast. This rich, full-bodied, tannic, massive Cote Rotie begs for 2–4 years of bottle age, and should drink well for two decades thereafter. Marcel Guigal believes it is the finest Chateau d’Ampuis made to date (the debut was 1995).
"The 2009 Cote Rotie Chateau d’Ampuis should turn out to be spectacular. Its dense purple color is accompanied by notes of camphor, incense, jammy black raspberries and blackberries, smoky barbecue, charcoal, graphite and licorice. Full-bodied, succulent and opulent, this flamboyant vintage has produced a stunning Cote Rotie that can be drunk young or cellared for two decades or more...94-97" WA 12/11
