Food Pairings for Guigal Chateauneuf-du-Pape
Nose is all about the barn yard. There's a little dookie in the mix. The texture is lush but a bit like rare meat. There is almost a blood component to it. There is a presence of rasberry on the fruit side. This is not a wine that fruit bombers are going to dig. I like the style. If there is one complaint it is that the wine is a little dis-jointed and all over the place. I think it might settle down in the bottle over the next couple...

Very ripe and spicy, this grew soft but concentrated in the warm vintage of 2001. Itrsquo;s ready to drink, but needs air to coax its full flavor, from the earthy bass notes to its floral airs.
Smells leathery and a bit overripe, with scents of dried fruit outweighing freshness. The leather and dried-cherry flavors linger enticingly on the finish, but show a trace of alcoholic warmth as well. A solid wine, but a disappointing effort from the Rhocirc;nersquo;s most famous and reliable neacute;gociant.
Old-fashioned, this full-bodied, traditional wine seduces with its decadent game, saddle-leather, plum and sauteed wild mushroom aromas. No hint of fancy oak, just a mouthful of Chacirc;teauneuf character that swirls around to a long, sweet finish. Another great neacute;goce red from Guigal. Drink now through 2008.
The 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape is a must buy. It boasts a deep plum/ruby color as well as a rich bouquet of blackberries, kirsch, spice box, pepper, grilled herbs, and meat juices. With supple tannins, full body, and beautiful texture and depth, it should drink nicely for 10ndash;15 years.
There are some wines that silence the panel with their greatness, wines that knock us in our seats to stare, slack-jawed. This is one of them. Itrsquo;s not just that itrsquo;s huge, mouthfilling in flavor and tough as nails; itrsquo;s more that itrsquo;s incredibly succulent, as if built out of some sort of stone that gives up juice. for all its intensity and ferrous minerality, it remains fresh, the red fruit and spice seeming to go on forever.
Marcel Guigal has produced another superb Chateauneuf Du Pape in 2001. Its medium plum/ruby color is accompanied by a lovely bouquetof kirsch liqueur, ground pepper, Provencal herbs, and balsam wood. Full-bodied and lightly tannic, with loads of fruit and glycerin as well as a sumptuous finish, it is similar to the top-flight seductive 2000. Drink it over the next 10ndash;12 years.
