Guigal Chateauneuf du Pape 2001
This wine is a fine, deep, dark-red color in the glass. On the nose it is spicy, with soft, ripe fruit aromas. On the palate there are is round tannins, complexity and power. A rich, full-bodied, smooth wine, with touches of ripe plums, stone fruit and soft fruit. This is a rich wine, with all in harmony and balance. Cellaring: Can be laid down for approximately 15 years. Suggestions for serving: Red meat, game birds and cheese A blend of 50% Old Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and others from at least approximately 45 year-old vines.
Pretty decent stuff. Got it at a restaurant and looking at the price above, mark-up wasn't so bad! Deep color, a little spice and a nice, smooth finish. Definately worth a second look.
Always a welcome friend, the very predictable ChduP is big and bold enough to hold its own with everything from flank steak to a flaming Chateau Briand. Steady tannins and a long smooth finish.
Yellow and brown tone of color is very thin around rim. Overall water color tone looks thick & strong. But thickness flowing down the glass is medium. Butter, oak, very light pleasing smoke, pear and vanilla smells are based overall. Berry kinds smells are also pleasing. Chocolate and cheddar cheese added with leather, dried grapes, dark cherry... fruitful complexed aroma is mild. 80% Grenache is very much matched with 10% syrah and others. Acidity is dominant, but not tough on drinking. The taste of 10% Syrah is really master piece. The trailing note in pepper taste of syrah is well balanced with Grenache. Empowered, but not exceeding, mouthful scents are really pleasing with molecule of fruit acidity. Very minimal scent of butter and toast with dried grape is good on base. Overall tanin is relatively weak, but this mild tanin is even better taste and well balanced with acidity. Mixture of syrah 10% and others really hit the taste. Overall texture is good and well balanced.
Four and a half glasses

...a lovely bouquet of kirsch liqueur, ground pepper, Provencal herbs, and balsam wood. Full-bodied and lightly tannic, with loads of fruit and glycerin as well as a sumptuous finish, it is similar to the top-flight, seductive 2000... Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.
