Guido Porro Barolo Lazzairasco 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

"Bright aromas including wild cherry, red rose, white pepper and clove lead the nose on this structured but refined Barolo. Succulent Morello and black cherry, raspberry, mint, sage and black pepper seamlessly intertwine on the palate alongside exhilarating acidity and firm tannins. It promises great aging potential and complexity further down the road...95" WE 10/1/2014

Rosehips, rooibos tea, and smoky tobacco come together on the earthy, tarry nose. Showing jammy black currant on entry, this is tight and powerful on the palate with more jammy black currant and lingonberry fruit, and a spiciness that hints at black pepper. Tight, short and a bit blocky in the mouth with huge tannins, mineral and medicinal tannins, this is a big, powerful wine that lacks the extra gear of the Santa Caterina this year. 91pts

More direct on the nose, which is really enticing with a slightly dusty, tea leaf, medicinal, and faintly woodsy aspect to the big  prune in alcohol aromas. This is more open on the palate with that little woodsy, note accenting the core of dark cherry and plum fruit.  This falls somewhere in the middle of the vintage stylistically with soft tannins, nice depth of fruit, and an excellent open feel, al leading to  nice tension on the finish which shows dusty tannins and  big licorice aromas, A second bottle which had been opened ten days prior Shows some evolution with a spicy, mushroom and camphor framed core of  wild macerated raspberry fruit. This really broadens on the palate and sweetness up in the mouth with excellent late arriving depth of herb flecked macerated cherry and plum fruit, finishes with full tannins that are a touch dry, An aggregate score for the two bottles: 93pts

Guido Porro ‘Vigna Santa Caterina’ -- Cut roses, flowers, herbs, cherry in alcohol, balsamic, lovely, high-toned, nice freshness, good mineral cut. Wild cherry fruit, clean, balsamic on the palate, fresh if small-scaled, salame in the mouth, touch of juniper. Nicely done, if subtle.

Aromatically this is on tonight, huge roses, tar, some minty herbs, medicinal base notes and a sweet edge of carob all come together nicely. In the mouth this starts out a bit closed, but surprisingly elegant already. the tannins build with air as does the fruit, though for the most part this is built on a cleansing astringency and wonderful medicinal notes that carry a bitter edge with them today. Gorgeously pale ruby and having already thrown a fair sediment, this might be close to it's plateau already, though with another decade of development ahead of it. Incredibly easy to drink and superbly balanced for a 14.5% wine, I'm just hoping for some additional complexity with time and perhaps more fruit as well but this is no slouch just the way it is. 91pts

AWE blind tasting - reticent nose, tight and closed but with leather, precise red fruits, a very gentle simmering raspberry sweetness, rainwater, cherry juice, rich yet very well composed with a lean yet muscular character, nice freshness in the mouth, polished tannins, a touch diffuse across the mp but with really nice purity, finishes with lift and nice grabby yet polished tannins, a very dried earthy note, very fresh with a little camphor on the finish, 90-91

This is quite perfumed and with noticeable alcohol but the aromas of damp earth, cherry lozenge, sweet herbs, rosemary, and roses are classic. On the palate this has some hard tannins and bright acids that lend a mineral edge to the bitter cherry fruit. The back end picks up notes of dried citrus peel and earth which transition into a very medicinal, camphor-tinged finish that ends with a fresh strawberry finale. Classic Serralunga fruit that softens fairly quickly with air. 92pts

This offers up a fine array of mineral, menthol, leather, dried asphalt, cherry in alcohol and licorice in alcohol tones with a touch of camphor and sweet medicinal background notes. There is plenty of alcohol on the nose, even just a bit too much but the complexity is compelling. Big sweet/sour fruit up front though the mid-palate is a touch tight and taut the superb tannins give this a very refined feel and great, zesty acids are in fine balance. Medium bodies in spite of the alcohol with tannins that grow on the backend, as does a minty herbal top note which, along with a touch of dried porcini, accents the black berry/medicinal fruit. Great fruit on the finish, which is a bit short but offers captivating black cherry fruit. Give this 3 years or so 2012-2024 93pts
