In an effort to overcome the stigma of the name, it seems that many producers of this ldquo;ignoblerdquo; grape variety are trying to make theirs as big as possible. As Martha Stewart would say, ldquo;Thatrsquo;s a good thing.rdquo; Bigger is better because it means that yoursquo;re getting more flavor for your dollar. So what do three sawbucks get you? Smoky, spicy boysenberry, blackberry, and blueberry to boot. Martha might use it to sponge paint a dresser. I recommend drinking it, preferably with a glass.
Guenoc Estate Vineyards covers a vast area of real estate in rural southern Lake County. Their property includes the northern most vineyards of Napa Valley along with all of Guenoc Valley, the nationrsquo;s first single-proprietor American Viticultural Area. The 1996 Petite Syrah is dark ruby in color with an abundance of black cherry, blackberry, cedar and fresh ground pepper aromas. Full in body and concentration, the wine mellows softly mid-palate to reveal a core of plum and blueberry fruit with a touch of soft oak. Moderate tannins leave a firm, yet pleasant finish.
This Petite Sirah isnrsquo;t showing well now, unless yoursquo;re a fan of big, dark, inky, tannic, dry, heavy red wines. It does have deep cherry and blackberry flavors.
This is an easy-drinking Petite Sirah from an always solid producer of the variety. The wine is a little less in your face than many of its competitors with noticeable acidity and flavors of dark plum, mocha and spicy blackberry, though its finish could have been a little bit longer.
Purplish ruby. Moderately full-bodied. Moderate acidity. Lots of fruit. Heavily oaked. Moderately tannic. Black fruits, black pepper, blueberries, vanilla. Lean and elegantly structured considering its lush extraction. Rich, creamy oak notes balance well with bright fruit.
