Grüner Veltliner Qualitätswein Halbtrocken Wachau Achleiten Stockkultur 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

The region of Wachau ranks among the most charming and ancient cultural historical landscapes of Austria. Weißenkirchen, a town of distinct character, lies nestled among unique terraced gardens that guard over the valley land and people with unerring vigilance. Ilse and Toni Bodenstein have been responsible for the estate's quality since the early nineties. Their central philosophy: The wines should reflect the vineyard sites that grew them. Toni Bodenstein dedicates much effort to do justice to the diversity of contrasts found in the smallest of areas, the unique soil formations and the subtle microclimate. Therefore, the wines made from the grapes grown in the various terroirs have their own unmistakable character, however fine distinctions between them may be. The vineyard and cellar tasks are performed according to traditional methods, paired with the necessary innovation, and always aspiring to produce the best possible quality. Grüner Veltliner Achleiten Stockkultur is an absolute gem of a wine. It is wonderfully bright and shows a range of complex and intriguing flavours and qualities. Twenty-six grams of residual sugar - while not especially obvious in its effect due to its sheer density and Mosel Riesling-like acidity - prevent this opulent, rich, honeyed wine from being labeled as "Smaragd." For all of its fullness, creaminess, and sheer ripeness, it displays remarkable clarity and lift, as well as subtle herbal, floral, and mineral notes and a remarkable degree of interplay. In short, it dramatically illustrates its great vineyard origins as well as the unique heritage of its ancient vines. The finish is transcendentally long and evocative. The wine itself will raise the hair on the back of your head, and will benefit from a year's cellaring.
