2007 Grove Mill Riesling ($17, find this wine) As often seems to be the case with New Zealand Rieslings, a little sweetness seems only to intensify and focus the flavors of lime zest and pear in this wine; it's got a nice floral note on the nose, too.

What do you get when you combine a half-century of winemaking expertise, the dramatic landscape and terroir of northern Italy, and a profound enjoyment of the good things in life? The answer is simple: the CAVIT COLLECTION, source of America’s #1 Italian wine. Through the years, savvy wine lovers have come to depend on the CAVIT COLLECTION as their favorite “go-to” source for stylish, elegant and versatile wines, perfect for any occasion. This stellar range of high-quality, food-friendly wines is produced at the Cavit winery in Trentino, a picturesque landscape of mountains, lakes, apple orchards and medieval castles. Vineyards in this region enjoy the warming effects of the "Ora del Garda," a dry, balmy breeze that sweeps across Lake Garda and protects the fruit from external moisture and disease. Contrastingly cool evenings promote rich, intense aromas and flavors in the grapes. Winemaking is overseen by Anselmo Martini, a 20+ year industry veteran and one of northern Italy’s top enologists. Production Area The Oltrepò Pavese, which means “beyond the Po River,” accounts for approximately 40,000 acres of vineyard planted in the southwestern part of Lombardy, Italy, on the right bank of the Po river, in the province of Pavia. Here the landscape of steeply rolling hills comprises limestone and clay-based soil, well-suited to the cultivation of vines. Only recently have the wines of Lombardy begun to acquire a well-deserved recognition that extends beyond regional borders. Traditionally these wines were sold in local country restaurants and taverns, along the banks of the Ticino and Po rivers. Grape Varieties 100% Riesling Vinification Cold fermentation, including brief skin contact, is conducted under rigorously controlled conditions in order to facilitate maximum extraction of aromas. Refinement takes place in stainless steel tanks, with early bottling designed to maintain the wine’s naturally fresh bouquet. Color Pale straw with green reflections Bouquet Elegant and clean, with floral and citrus notes, characteristic of Riesling Taste Refreshing, lively and well balanced, with a hint of sweetness. Rich, luscious flavors of ripe peach, apricot and citrus. Alcohol 11.5% Serving Suggestions Enjoy with flavorful appetizers, meat and vegetable patés. Delicious with fish and white meats such as chicken and pork, and an excellent companion for Chinese, Japanese, Thai and Indian-inspired cuisine.

/ This northern Italian Riesling has a steely Alpine nose with hints of mountain flowers, citrus, melon and tarragon. Its slightly off-dry flavors caress the palate. It is light-bodied, with delicious, fresh and juicy apricot nuances. And with low alcohola nd crisp acidity, this is the prfect summer sipper and a great accompanimnet to lightly piquant dishes or shellfish.

/ Produced in northern Italy, Cavit's elegantly contoured off-dry Riesling offers up a supremely sippable version of this venerable white grape. In the glass, the wine appears nearly colorless which makes the wild honey and stone fruit aromas that leap forth from the glass a pleasant suprise. Chock a block with apricots, pears and melons, this Riesling could easily pull duty as a cocktail quaff or companion to Chinese takeout.

The Pfalz region of Germany is prized for its climate: close to the Rhine, yet more southerly and slightly warmer, allowing ideal conditions for the noble Riesling grape. The largest and most respected winery of the region, Niederkirchener Winemakers, is also among the oldest, having celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2001. The winery is gifted, not only with a wealth of traditional expertise, but the extensive resources available to such a large and successful enterprise. Niederkirchener has launched Blue Fish, an exciting new brand that showcases its expertise in producing extraordinary Riesling. Blue Fish Riesling is estate- bottled at a state-of-the-art winery with the most modern vinification equipment, temperature controls and winemaking techniques, yielding a premium quality wine at an exceptional value. Production Area From the vineyards of Niederkirchen in the district of Pfalz, western Germany, close to the German border with Alsace. Grape Varieties 100% Riesling Vinification After harvest, the wine undergoes a temperature-controlled fermentation, followed by partial malolactic fermentation. Color Delicate gold with pale green reflections Bouquet Seductive perfume of ripe apricot and peaches Taste Dry and harmonious with a pleasing structure and underlying acidity. Alcohol 12.5% Serving Suggestions Serve lightly chilled. Blue Fish Riesling is a sublime match with fish dishes, risottos, creamy pasta dishes, sushi platters and Asian-inspired cuisine.

BEST BUY/ From the Pfalz cooperative, this is a strong effort at a bargain price. It's not the most complex Riesling, but its aromas of cinnamon-dusted apples are followed by refreshing off-dry flavors of apple and melon.
