Grove Mill Pinot Gris Marlborough 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

As always the Grove Mill Pinot Gris is an enticing combination of complexity and approachability. This is one is no exception with just a little more elegance than is usual in the wine. Bouquet: The wine is complex and distinctive, with a density of very ripe tropical fruit aromas, mango, and a touch of musk. Palate: Medium sweetness on the entry. This is a concentrated style with a great deal of poise, great texture and with a beautiful balance and structure. Very persistent finish.

Based in the Awatere Valley – the southernmost, coolest and driest of Marlborough’s growing regions – Yealands is one of only a handful of wineries around the world to be certified as carbon neutral. The estate was founded in 2008 by dynamic environmental entrepreneur and iconic figure Peter Yealands, and represents the largest privately-owned vineyard in New Zealand. Comprising 133 vineyards blocks on 1,000 hectares (2,471 acres), Yealands’ sustainable Seaview Estate is designed with biological diversity in mind. Alongside the vineyards, 25 wetlands and more than 175,000 types of native flora support an ever increasing range of fauna. His dedication to the land has continued to guide his holistic approach to ever-evolving sustainable vine growing practices, not only garnering global acclaim for beautifully crafted wines, but also admiration for his visionary tenacity. In fact, Yealands has been selected as the 2014 “Green Company of the Year” by The Drinks Business. Production Area 100% Seaview Vineyard. Yealand’s Seaview Vineyard is New Zealand’s most coastal vineyard. Here the vines battle against the elements producing small berries with thick skins and wonderfully rich and intense flavors. Vinification Five parcels of Pinot Gris were harvested individually over a period of five days. The fruit was crushed, de-stemmed and pressed gently, separating the free run juices from the pressings. The juice was cold settled for 48 hours then racked prior to a long, cool fermentation in stainless steel tanks to capture and enhance the fruit flavors. Each parcel was fermented separately using a range of selected yeasts. Following fermentation the wine was blended, fined lightly and filtered prior to bottling. Color Pale lemon Bouquet Notes of pear drop and nutty characteristics Taste Flavors of stone fruit and honey on the medium weight palate which lead to a crisp, refreshing finish Alcohol 13.5% Serving Suggestions This wine will pair beautifully with seafood, chicken and pork.

Au Contraire represents the first California brand developed by Palm Bay International. While the Taub family has focused on imports in recent years, their roots in the wine business are in California. Au Contraire is an exciting return to these roots after travelling a decades-long journey around the world. “Au Contraire” an expression often used by Palm Bay’s beloved company founder, David S. Taub, often preceded an insight that typically took a turn from conventional wisdom. President and CEO Marc D. Taub fittingly adapted this expression to take Palm Bay into this new and unexpected direction… literally. Au Contraire, the first of the Taub Family Vineyards Selections, exemplifies a commitment to developing outstanding quality wine offerings in key California appellations. Production Area California, United States. Grape Varieties 100% Pinot Gris. Vinification Fruit was hand sorted and gently whole-cluster pressed. The juice is fermented in 100% stainless steel tanks (at temperatures between 63-70°F) to bring out the clean, fresh nuances of Pinot Gris, primarily with native yeasts. There was no malo-lactic (ML) fermentation. Color Medium lemon. Bouquet Layers of floral notes are accented by intense and fresh citrus fruit and a hint of spice. Taste Crisp acidity and a clean, refreshing mouthfeel. Alcohol 13% Serving Suggestions Pairs well with a variety of food including salads, appetizers, grilled vegetables, seafood, white meats, or enjoyed on its own as an aperitif.
