Groth Oakville Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Wine 2013

Member Review by EMark:

Nice wine. Not, particularly, fruit forward—some blackberry, some anise. Then, some leather, some slate, some dust (obviously, not “Rutherford Dust”). A sturdy wine, but with, pretty much, resolved tannins. A little “sour” on the aftertaste.

Vintage: Mellow is the word that comes to mind to describe the vintage from a winegrowing and winemaker perspective. Fantastic is the word that comes to mind to describe the quality and bounty of the crop. Two outstanding years in a row – Mother Nature has blessed us again. Early bud break was followed by exceptional weather that continued through the entire season. There was no need to be frantic about picking – we were all very relaxed. We were able to pick when the grapes were at their finest, giving us fantastic fruit expression and outrageous color, bodacious tannin structure in the reds. 2013 will go down in the annals as one of the greats along with 2012. Two in a row – WOW! Michael Weis, Winemaker Emeritus Harvest: The Cabernet Sauvignon fruit is grown on our Estate controlled vineyards, in the Oakville AVA, in the heart of the Napa Valley. The fruit is night harvested, cluster sorted by hand, crushed and put into small tanks for fermentation. Winemaking: Fermentation was carried out over a ten-day period in small, temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks at an average temperature of 85 F. After pressing and settling, the wine was transferred to small French oak barrels for aging. The sweet vanilla character derived from 22 months in the barrels blends well with the black cherry and blackberry flavors and aromas of the wine. Winemaker tasting notes: Deep dark plum red in color, this 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon shows rich aromas of cassis, ripe dark cherries, black currants, cedar, and a hint of bay leaf. The mouthfeel is youthful and exuberant with bright acidity and bold tannins, a round oak sweetness, fruit flavors of plum and blackberry, and an intriguing savory note. The massive structure results in a remarkably long rich finish. Menu suggestion: The abundance of big tannins this vintage beckon for a richly marbled bone-in rib eye, perfectly seared and dusted with salt and pepper. Should you not find that in your ice box, this Cabernet Sauvignon will be right at home with a big juicy cheeseburger too. - Cameron Parry, Director of Winegrowing

Vintage: “Perfect, classic, abundant” describe the 2012 vintage. Quality and quantity were in great supply in the 2012 harvest. Beautiful Spring, Summer and Fall weather highlighted the growing season. With very few concerns, winegrowers and winemakers were able to sit back and allow Mother Nature to strut her stuff – and strut she did. The vintage was, literally, a mirror image of the classic 2005 vintage; climate-wise, yield-wise and quality-wise. Great aroma development, phenomenal extraction and unctuous flavors were the result of patience and creativity. We made some memorable wines from a spectacular vintage. It is one for the ages. Winemaker tasting notes: The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon shows off a beautiful dark cherry color in the glass with aroma notes of plums, dried cherries, and toasted hazelnuts. The mouthfeel is round and juicy with firm full tannins, rich fruit flavors of huckleberry and a dried cherry sweetness fade into the warm spicy finish with hints of blackberry. Menu suggestion: Red meat loves Cabernet, that is for sure, but a big steak isn’t obligatory. This wine with its big fruit and balanced structure will pair quite well with just about any richly flavored protein heavy dish. - Cameron Parry, Winemaker

Vintage: 2011 11/04/2014

Winemaker tasting notes: The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon is big and lush with huge gobs of fruit in the aroma and flavor. The texture of the wine is soft and supple, typical of Cabernet Sauvignons grown in our area of the Oakville AVA.Vintage: Very much like the 2010 harvest 2011 was a year punctuated by a direct move from Spring into Fall. Spring rains during bloom and set disrupted pollination of the grape flowers resulting in reduced yields across the board. In retrospect, this turned out to be a silver lining in an otherwise gray cloud. As the season progressed cool weather continued resulting in even more fruit being thinned off the vines. This long, cool growing season was crowned, fortunately, by a marvelous Indian summer of warm, dry days in September and October. This blessed weather event gave us wonderful fruit character at lower than normal sugars, alcohol levels. Later rains in late-October, early November had minimal impact on any remaining Cabernet on the vines. Overall, the vintage was a challenge but due to a lot of work in the vineyards and in the winery we are blessed with wonderful wines again from this amazing area.Harvest: The Cabernet Sauvignon fruit is grown on our Estate controlled vineyards, in the Oakville AVA, in the heart of the Napa Valley. This is a lovely Cabernet to drink now and over the next few years. It shows its Oakville pedigree with smooth tannins and dry, complex flavors of blackberry, black currant and cherry, with a fine earthiness. Wine Enthusiast. The year was 1981. The 121 acre purchase was the Oakville Vineyard planted by Justin Meyer and Ray Duncan from 1972-1974 to Cabernet Sauvignon, in the heart of the Oakville appellation. It was prime Cabernet Sauvignon land, planted by masters.

A cool-climate expression of Cabernet, pungent, gamy and herbal, with a loamy earth edge to the dried berry and currant. Gains on the finish. Should be cellared, if briefly, and decanted. Best from 2014 through 2024. -JL Wine Spectator. A Cabernet Sauvignon wine from California in USA. 2009 Groth Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml
