Food Pairings for Grgich Hills Zinfandel Napa County Sonoma County
Nose of cranberry, currant, underbrush, sage and white pepper. Some herbal notes. Hints of anise and plum. All red and purple fruit. On the palate, loamy and nicely balanced. Strong herbal element and driven by plum fruit. Wild berry, marionberry and blackberry nuances as well. Sage, brush and hints of green with some tomato leaf. Perhaps this needs a bit more time to integrate and evolve. I generally like Grgich zinfandel more. 86 pts. 5/10/13 at winery
This is a big impressive zin. Lots of spice and tobacco.
Nose opens with unpleasant combinations, including musky wild game, sweaty ungulate, horse stall, barnyard, rusty metal, forest moss, and gourd vine, with lilac and other florals emerging just enough to freshen the mix over time. Palate begins with sour raisin, rusty metal and mesquite flavors, with sufficient tannins and acidity to support some evolution. Medium bodied, smooth mouth spread infused with tart acidity allows for emergence of fruit on the mid palate after being hidden at first. Cherry and milk chocolate appear by third or fourth sip, allowing sweet to mix with sour. In fact, the wine generally sweetens over the first hour before closing down. Woodsy tones include oak, mesquite, ashes, and forest moss.
Rich and berry
Maroon color in the glass is not positive to me. Yep, it has oxidized nose. Initial palate sensation is very interesting. Medium body and and a lot of dried fruit flavors--fig, apple, raisins--those kind of things. Then I get the tanning thing on the edges of my tongue. Then I get the oxidized thing--not bad, but distracting. An OK wine, but not my favorite.
